- Central Park, "The Indian Hunter" -
The bronze Indian Hunter, by John Quincy Adams Ward in 1869,
was the first sculpture in Central Park by an American artist.
Having studied the Lakota tribe, Ward was interested in
developing American subjects. This sculpture of a hunter,
his bow and arrow in hand, restraining his faithful
hunting dog, shows Ward's sensitive commitment to realism
and anatomy. It makes its home on the pathway west of the
Mall, east of the Sheep Meadow at 66th Street.

- Central Park, "The Falconer Statue" -
Originally dedicated in 1875, the Falconer by George Blackall
Simonds, depicts both a human figure clad in Eliabethan
dress, and a falcon, representing the union and communion
between a bird of prey and man. The Falconer was removed
from Central Park in 1957 after the sculpture was seriously
vandalized and the falcon was stolen. In 1982, a missing
arm and the falcon were recast, the damage to the surface
repaired and it was resotred on its site on the West 72nd
