«GM Max Euwe before the The EUWE SUITE - 1985: This 15-minute work consists of five movements, each of which is based on a game of chess played by Max Euwe, the Dutch mathematician and World Chess Champion (1935-7). The games used in the work were: Euwe-Colle 1926, Euwe-Alekhine 1935, Alekhine-Euwe 1937, Euwe-Najdorf 1954 and Moonen-Euwe 1981. Pitches were assigned to chessboard squares. The melodies for a given movement were determined by the moves in the corresponding game. For one movement, timbre was determined by the type of chess piece being moved.
«1935 match analysis (Flohr very chic) If you want to hear the Euwe Suite, it is included in the album - Cartography - Irida 0007, which includes the Sanctus, from Missa Fractalis, and Concertal, both by Gene DeLisa; Fractalis Balinesus by Robert Michael Keefe; and Euwe Suite and Runes by Rodney Waschka II. All the works were realized using a New England Digital synthesis system (Synclavier II). (1986):

«GM Dr. Max Euwe - John E Hawkes, February 2007 - With thanks to John Greschak and his article “Connections between Music and Chess” for showing me the way. «A game of chess represents the struggle of two parties, and that's why all the principles generally typical for the struggle between two opponents can be extended to this game.» (M. Euwe).
In 1935, Netherlands
«The World Chess Championship match Alekhine-Euwe (1935)»
Euwe won with the score of 15.5 : 14.5 (+ 9, - 8, = 13) and became
the 5-th World Champion.
In 1937, Netherlands
«The Return World Chess Championship match Euwe-Alekhine (1937)»
Euwe lost the title with the score of 9.5 : 15.5 (- 10, + 4, = 11).
For Euwe the rational, mainly logical approach to chess art is typical. "Euwe is the genius of self-discipline. He has become a strong master owing to his remarkable capacity for work, his ability to productively utilize every minute..." (G. Kmoch, the International Master and the International Arbiter, Austria). As the FIDE President, Euwe has made a significant contribution to the development and popularization of chess, promoted the consolidation of international sports ties.
«I am certain of victory over Euwe», said World Champion Alekhine in 1935, and he was hardly the only one to underestimate the Dutchman’s chances. Euwe’s win came as a shock. This magnificent book, filling a gap in the literature of chess, shows that Euwe’s world title was the result of his iron will, his methodical drive and his energetic handling of all aspects of the game. Max Euwe (1900-1981) has been called a "genius of order" and the "chess logician". He wrote more than 70 books, many of which are still in print today. By bringing his world title under the aegis of FIDE he profoundly changed the history of chess in the twentieth century. It was Euwe’s diplomatic determination as President of FIDE that saved the Match of the Century in 1972 between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Acclaimed chess writer Alexander Munninghoff tells the unforgettable tale of the fifth World Champion. Praise for Max Euwe, The Biography: ~ «Without this book your chess library is not worth its name.» – HANS REE ~ «A fitting monument for Max Euwe.» – LODEWIJK PRINS ~ «A lot has been unearthed, including games, which was completely new to me» – HEIN DONNER ~ «A majestic read.» – JAN TIMMAN «TRIVIA» - About Euwe and Suite - (the following document is tranlated from French): «The "Prouet-Thue-Morse" suite: 01101001100101101001011001101001... has been discovered for the first time by the French mathematician P. Prouhet in 1859, which applied it to the Theory of Numbers. However, Prouhet did not mention explicitly the continuation . The Norwegian Axel Thue employed this suite for drawing up the study of Word Combination in 1906. Because Thue wrote only in Norwegian, his publications were unknown; the refered suite reached the World Knowledge with the Marston Morse's publications from 1859 to 1921, when Morse used this one in this famous researches in Differential Geometry. This suite was discovered independently several times, not always by professional mathematicians. For example, MAX EUWE, a chess player and teacher in mathematics, discovered it in 1929, for an application to chess, proving, by this way, there is an infinity of chess games which do not comprise a repetition of the three same moves.» More about the Thue-More suite - «The "Thue-Morse" sequence or "Prouet-Thue-Morse" sequence, is a binary sequence whose initial segments alternate (in a certain sense). The "Thue-Morse" sequence begins: 01101001100101101001011001101001... However, sometimes other symbols are used besides 0 and 1, such as 1 and 2, or 1 and 0 (in the opposite order), or left and right, up and down, etc. Thus one may speak of the Thue-Morse sequence on a given ordered pair. © John E Hawkes - June 2007 |
