"Chess-Theory International Editorial Board" John E Hawkes,
English Chess journalist and translator, living in Aix-en-Provence
(France).
John E Hawkes was born on 1st February 1942 in Cheltenham, England. He grew up in South London and went to Henry Thornton Grammar School. He worked as a civil engineer for London Transport then British Rail, living around Perth (Scotland) for a decade until 1986 when moving to France where he has taught English and now works as a freelance translator based in Aix en Provence. An internationally recognised connoisseur of postal play, John’s record as a chess writer includes being Games Editor of the Scottish CCA magazine, a contributor to the British Chess Magazine, Gambisco (FRA) and CCYearbook (ITA) and holding the post of Games Editor for the British Correspondence Chess Society’s fine magazine “Chess Post” or the past eleven years. John was board 1 for the GB team in the 1st European Team Tmt. after being runner-up to Adrian Hollis in the British Postal Championship of 1970-71 and played over-the-board for the BR team in three Railways Olympiads: York 1976, Boras 1980 and Sofia 1985(Capt). Outside of chess journalism his interests are classical music, jazz, the arts and photography.
