Magnus Carlsen from Norway is a 17-year-old chess prodigy whose progression has been spectacular during last years. In 2004, he became the world's youngest grandmaster at the age of 13, and he became famous throughout the world on the occasion of his victory in the International Chess Tournament Corus 2004, group C, in Wijk an Zee, with an over 2700 rating. Again in 2004, at Reykjavik, he beats Karpov and draws Kasparov. The gifted adolescent goes on with his brilliant progression, realizing excellent performances in prestigious tournaments, beating better ranked players, in Bienne 2006 and Linares 2007, where he finished 3/8. In Corus Chess 2008 Magnus finished first ex-aequo with Levon Aronian. From 2008 Magnus Carlsen is in the worldwide TOP 10. Recently Magnus Carlsen's career has reached a new peak; in the tournament of Bilbao he has momentarily taken the lead and became virtually the N° 1 player in the world based on the unofficial up-to-date rankings. But after 2 defeats Carlsen loses this place before the ranking becomes official. Now it is clear for everyone that Magnus will become one day the world champion and even his colleagues GM recognize this is only a question of time. Today Magnus Carlsen, at the age of almost 18, is, according to the official FIDE-ratings list of January 2009, the 4th chess player in the world and credited with a rating of 2796. Carlsen is, behind Ivanchuk, the second best ranked player taking part in the Corus Chess 2009.
