Vassily Ivanchuk is an Ukrainian Grandmaster. Ivanchuk was born in Berezhany, Ukraine on March 18, 1969. He first achieved international notice by winning the 1988 New York Open with 7.5/9, ahead of some notorious Grandmasters. He tied for first place in the 1988 World Junior Chess Championship at Adelaide, but lost the title on tiebreak to Joel Lautier, He was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1988, and entered the world top 10 the same year. Vassily Ivanchuk has been a leading chess player in the world since 1988, winning many prestigious competitions or, anyway, reaching the fist places. He won the Linares tournament in 1989, 1991 and 1995, the Corus Chess tournament in 1996, Foros (Aerosvit) in 2006 and 2007 and equally the Montreal International 2007. Ivanchuk was also World Blitz Chess champion in 2007-2008. Ivanchuk at times reaching 2nd in the FIDE rating list, but has never won the World Chess Championship. It may be notice that Vassily Ivanchuk has often erratic results, and consequently since 2007 his world ranking has ranged from 12th to 2nd. With a Rating of 2779, in the FIDE-ratings list of January 2009, Ivanchuk is currently number 3 in the world and the best ranked player taking part in the Corus Chess 2009. ************
