The Super GM Morelia-Linares 2007 is taking place from the 17th of February and the 11th of March. The programm includes first 7 rounds played in Morelia, Mexico and then 7 rounds played in Linares, Spain. Both countries own, for a long time, a great chess tradition. Thus, as regards Mexico, we cannot forget:

Teimour Radjabov withdraws from Morelia-Linares -
"16.02.2007 The Mexican leg of this Super-GM is starting on Friday, with Topalov, Anand, Leko, Svidler, Aronian and others participating. But after a burglary of the hotel room of his father and trainer, and what he perceives as lack of support by the organisers, Teimour Radjabov has withdrawn his participation. He will be replaced by Vassily Ivanchuk" (ChessBase report).

Last minute replacement Ivanchuk - played a very interesting Scotch against Leko and obtained a nasty attack on the king, but used up too much time and had to give perpetual check when he only had a second left to play 13 moves!

Magnus Carlsen broke his recent lean streak of 13 games without a win for a 3.5-0.5 lifetime score against Alexander Morozevich.

Super substitute Ivanchuk defeats the world number one Topalov. The other three games were drawn, but young Carlsen almost made it 2/2 when he refuted an unsound sacrifice by Aronian with …f5!. The game ended in perpetual check after he missed 28.e6!

The Magnus Carlsen Blog written by his father explains it all well and should be compulsory reading for all his fans!

  • Round No3
  •   -   Morelia (MEX), 2007   -
Carlsen just wasn’t there against Anand: lost objectivity, then unsuccessfully tried blitzing his way out of defeat. Morozevich against Aronian was a most interesting game which led to time pressure and really awful mistakes from top GMs! Morozevich missed the mating schema no less than twice. After the 40-move time control the draw was quickly agreed.

  • Round No4
  •   -   Morelia (MEX), 2007   -
Anand played slowly but Morozevich made serious mistakes just before the time control and the Indian won the endgame easily to head the tournament with 3 out of 4.

Carlsen played interestingly v the King’s Indian Attack with 4… b5 !? and Ivanchuk then spent an hour on his first 12 moves! Ivanchuk played well in the middle game but eventually the youngster got the point to take second spot in the tournament with 2.5 out of 4 points.

Leko sacrified an exchange v Aronian and then settled for a draw.

Topalov’s draw proposal was accepted by Svidler – who had a better (possibly winning?) position.

Aronian played a brilliant sequence against Anand – both of his bishops going to the seventh rank on successive moves! Reward at last for his creative play.

Topalov resigned in a drawn position against young Carlsen!! So Magnus now leads the tournament!

Bad day for the spectators. Three perfunctory, non-combat draws played after a day’s rest on Friday! – not deserving the commentary given to the Anand – Ivanchuk game.

Carlsen held Svidler to a draw with black. Ivanchuk beat Aronian. Anand won from a bad position against Leko and joins Carlsen in the lead at tournament half-time.

Topalov against Morozevich was incredibly badly played by the super GMs! The show now moves over the Atlantic to Linares in Spain for 2nd March restart.

    Morelia-Linares 2007
      -   Halfway Impressions   -

Having followed the Morelia (MEX) tournament daily during a colourful week, and observed the performances of virtually all the current Chess world elite, we have some personal reflections that we wish to express here briefly.
Of course, the first notable event has been the Teimour Radjabov withdrawal. Personally we are very surprised to notice so little feedback to such a dramatic incident, apart from the ChessBase special report! This occurrence and many other goings-on in recent chess competitions, as well as in the past, reveal the psychological frailty of the great chess players of today and equally their great solitude. It is difficult to understand why the grandmasters present in Morelia did not clearly express their solidarity towards Teimour Radjabov, for example by a common declaration, and why not some financial gesture to their shattered colleague – a whip-round?
The second feature refers to the kind of chess played in Morelia, its relative level and individual results of each Super-GM engaged in this prestigious competition. One observes first that openings played through this week are of a very restricted repertory (Najdorf 6.Be3, Catalan Open, King's Indian Fianchetto, Slav etc..), are very technical and played with full knowledge of most recent developments. It is true, one can credit all participants for a relative combativeness, leading to a significant number of won games. But, unfortunately, many games have been spoilt by mistakes - blunders not easily acceptable from super-GMs. Frankly speaking, the general level of play in the middle game has been rather disappointing!
To pursue this quick summary, we think it useful to look at chess history. All through that long history of the game you find exceptionally great chess players who have imposed their strong personalities as well as a very pure style of playing. It is sufficient to look back at some of the greatest players : Philidor, Morphy, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tal, Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov in particular. All these players have clearly dominated their period and also possessed remarkable styles of play. However, it is obvious that, since Kasparov’s retirement the Chess world is now searching for a new and incontestable number one.
Perhaps this remark may appear a little harsh when there are exceptional great chess players - all super-GMs - assembled in Morelia and Linares. Of course in their more-or-less long chess careers, they have all played many very fine chess games, for the enjoyment of all chess enthusiasts; and they deserve their top-of-the listing places! In addition, it is easy to prove that today’s chess competition, as in other human fields (sporting or other), is more difficult and stressful than in the past. But, nevertheless we maintain that the real successor to Kasparov has not yet been established!
After Corus and Morelia, it is pretty clear that a new chess generation represented by Teimour Radjabov, Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin particularly, is now suddenly part of the very closed world of the chess elite. Remarkable was Teimour’s performance in the Corus 2007 event and incredibly unexpected Magnus’ tremendous result in Morelia, whilst Sergey’s progress is continuing soundly. We think that one of these young prodigies will reveal himself, very soon now, to be the true successor to Fischer and Kasparov. Evidently other scenarios are conceivable, but this one is rather tempting – and the most media-attractive one!...What do you think, readers and spectators?
