The
top-three result in 2006 was:
1. Levon ARONIAN (Well placed again this year and playing enterprising,
creative chess)
2. Teimour RADJABOV (Sadly missing this time: replaced by Ivanchuk
after the Mexican burglary incident!)
3. Veselin TOPALOV (In dismal form in Morelia – must try harder to
show his talent!)
Grandmaster
Vladimir Potkin - Aronian’s second - hoping to clinch a second,
successive victory for his man this year.

Round No8
- Linares (ESP), 2007 -
02.03.2007 - The Super-GM Morelia/Linares has entered its second half
with the first round completed in the Andalusian town of Linares.
Four draws again! Topalov equalised convincingly with black against
Anand, Leko had half-a-pawn advantage for a while v Ivanchuk but the
skin-and-bones pawn ending was a genuine draw.
Aronian-Svidler was a premature draw – a highly interesting position
with White (Aronian) looking to be in a difficult situation - but
apparently “Carl” Svidler did not want to ruin his now 8 game run of
draws! Maybe he’s going for a record - 14 draws out of 14 played?
Morozevich-Carlsen (who was possibly winning) was the best game for
the spectators. (See our commentary).

No need to know the language!... Statistical note: Two-thirds of the
games in this year’s event have been drawn! We hope the spectators get
at good refund of their entrance money!
Round No9
- Linares (ESP), 2007 -
Morozevich chalks up a first win - Carl Svidler keeps on drawing!
Topalov managed to save a white game against the clearly superior
Ivanchuk, who got into time trouble and had to concede a draw. Peter
Leko lost badly to Alexander Morozevich to join him at the tail-end of
the cross table, with Topalov a mere half a point higher up the table.
The other two games were drawn.

Round No10
- Linares (ESP), 2007 -
Anand beats Carlsen again to take the clear lead. A devastating crush
of his co-leader Carlsen - now down to equal second with Ivanchuk, a
point behind the leader. Peter Leko had troubles with White v Topalov
but managed to save his bacon draw. Monday is a rest.

Peter Svidler defeated Peter Leko for his first win after 11
consecutive draws in this tournament and moved up to third place.
Alexander Morozevich won an exciting game vs Vassily Ivanchuk whilst
Magnus Carlsen held Veselin Topalov to a draw and stays in

Round No13
- Linares (ESP), 2007 -
Anand did not risk playing a proper game of chess, showed unambitious,
uninteresting white play against the tail-ender Leko. He apparently
thinks his half-point lead enough to win the tournament. Carlsen –
Svidler was an interesting draw, if not particularly long. The
Knight ending in Morozevich v the disappointing Topalov was perhaps
the only really interesting pure endgame in the tournament.

Round No14
- Linares (ESP), 2007 -
1. Vishy ANAND – 8.5/14 - This performance puts him up to Number 1
spot in the world ratings!
The undisputed STAR of MORELIA-LINARES 2007 -2-3. Magnus CARLSEN
–7.5/14. Following on from the very difficult Corus experience, his
result is somewhat unexpected. This is a quite superb performance.
The young Dane showed his great talent, admirable fighting-spirit,
tenacity and strength of character.
2-3. Alexander MOROZEVICH – 7.5/14 - A fantastic finish. Sasha grabs
the second/third spot, same score as Carlsen, coming from Mexico with
2 points from 7, to streak through the sleeping super-GM midfield
with a ‘hat-trick’ finish : wins v Ivanchuk, Topalov and Svidler. Bravo!
