Why Corus Chess 2009 is a Major Event!
(by Michel Bruneau CT webmaster)
|
As
everyone knows, in the Chess world, the Corus Chess Tournament 2009
will be held from 16 January – 1 February 2009 in Wijk aan Zee. As the
Chess-Theory webmaster I focus my attention on captivating fight that
we may expect in the Group A. Many commentators may consider that
without Chess Stars Topalov (2796, N°1), Anand (2791, N°2) and Kramnik
(2759, N°8 ) this prestigious competition loses a great part of its
interest. I explain here, at the contrary, why Corus Chess 2009 is a
major event!
In
the group A, 14 participants are: Ivanchuk, Vassily (2779, N°3),
Carlsen, Magnus (2776, N°4), Morozevich, Alexander (2771, N°5),
Radjabov, Teimour (2761, N°6), Movsesian, Sergei (2751, N°10), Aronian,
Levon (2750, N°11), Wang, Yue (2739, N°13), Kamsky, Gata (2725, N°17),
Dominguez, Leiner (2717, N°23), Adams, Michael (2712, N°24), Karjakin,
Sergei (2706, N°27), van Wely, Loek (2625), Stellwagen, Daniel (2612),
Smeets, Jan (2601).

In
view to clarify my reasoning let me consider the subgroup of super GM,
I call S: Ivanchuk, Carlsen, Morozevich, Radjabov, Aronian, Wang and
Kamsky; 7/14: it is exactly half of all players engaged in the Group
A. A rather accurate examination of profile of 7 GMs in S-subgroup and
7 other GMs leads me to predict:
1°) Ivanchuk, Carlsen, Morozevich, Radjabov, Aronian, Wang and Kamsky
will play a leading role and presumably, in final standings, they will
occupy three first places.
2°) The fight between this 7 super GM will be unremitting and it is
difficult to predict the outcome according to the atypical profile
of most of them.
3°) One, two or three of this 7 super GM will become World Chess
Champion in near future.
If
you are interested, I could strengthen this thesis by adding some
commentaries about each participants in the group A. [Michel Bruneau
