The Super GM Linares Chess 2009 takes place from February 18 to March 8, 2009, in Linares, Andalusia (Spain). This is the 26th edition of Torneo Internacional "Ciudad de Linares"; This year the tournament is played exclusively in Spain.
Vishy Anand did not take part in the Corus Chess 2009 Tournament; but the "XXVIth Ciudad de Linares" will be a significant opportunity for the Indian Grandmaster to proof his leading role. In the absence of Veselin Topalov (N° 1 in the January 2009 FIDE Rating List), Viswanathan Anand (N° 2 in the January 2009 FIDE Rating List) appears logically as the favourite of the new edition of Linares Tournament. By the way, Vishy Anand was the winner of the "Wimbledom of Chess" (Linares) twice, in 2007 and 2008.
In the following table you will find the list of participants grandmaster

  • Round No1
  •   -   Ciudad de Linares (ESP), 2009   -
The main event of this first round was the win of Anand, Viswanathan current World Chess Champion against top Azerbaijani grandmaster, number 6 on the January 2009 FIDE Rating list, Radjabov Taimour. Three other games was drawn. Aronian, Levon vs Carlsen, Magnus was a Catalan: Closed, (4.Nf3 Be7 5.Bg2 0-0) [E06], where the Armenian grandmaster opted for the rare move 13.a3. The game Wang Yue vs Ivanchuk, Vassily was a Nimzo-Indian draw in 31 moves. The French, Winawer, advance variation [C19] has been chosen in the encounter Dominguez Perez, Leinier vs Grischuck, Alexander. In the ending of this last game, with two Rooks, two minor pieces and three pawns in each camp, it seems that the Russian GM had some opportunities to win, that he probably did not exploit in a satisfactory way.

  • Round No2
  •   -   Ciudad de Linares (ESP), 2009   -
Vishy Anand lost, with White, against Levon Aronian in a Semi-Slav, Meran variation [D47]. After a positional pawn sacrifice, White obtained an excellent compensation, with an active play and the pair of Bishops. Nevertheless, Aronian found a very active defence. Finally, trying to exchange both Queens, Vishy played the blunder 33.Rg3?? (0-1 in 53 m.). In the King's Indian, Orthodox variation [E94], Teimour played the novelty 14.Nd1 (instead of the usual 14.g5) (draw in 42).

Grischuk, Alexander vs Wang Yue was a Slave, Czech defense (5...Bf5), Krause Attack (6.Ne5) [D17]. After a pawn sacrifice, at the 14th move, White obtains sufficient compensations with, in the middle game, a good pan structure and an active play. In a endgame with Bishop of opposite colors, the White one was more active and mostly White gets a protected passed pawn in g5 (1-0 in 57).

  • Round No3
  •   -   Ciudad de Linares (ESP), 2009   -
The game Aronian, Levon (2750) - Radjabov, Teimour (2761) ½-½ (42 m.) was a King's Indian Defense, 3.Nc3 [E61], where Levon opted for the solid Fianchetto system (5.g3). In the middle game Bishops of each side was unable to exercise an impact because they were permanently blocked by pawns of both sides. White and Black Rooks tried to create a pressure on the Queen side without perform a penetration in the other camp. Ivanchuk, Vassily (2779) - Grischuk, Alexander (2733) was a Nimzo-Indian, Three Knight variation, with 5.g3 [E21], where White used the Kramnik's novelty 18.Re1. This game finished by a Rook endgame without winning chances.

One finds equally a Rook ending in the game Dominguez Perez, Leinier (2717) vs Anand, Viswanathan [B90] ½-½ (41 m.) Sicilian, Najdorf, Byrne (English) attack (6.Be3), with a rook, a minor piece and three pawns. Wang Yue (2739) - Calsen, Magnus (2776) Queen's Gambit Declined, with 5.Bg5, was equally an interesting game leading to a technical minor pieces endgame (a White Knight against a Black Bishop), with three pawns on each side, where nobody is able to win.

We apologize for the inconvenience but we do not find enough time to study carefully a game of this round and consequently do not propose any analysis. At this subject it is true that a serious study of a game and its implementation on the web needs a full day's work :-)

  • Round No4

Carlsen, Magnus vs Ivanchuk, Vassily was a Gruenfeld, Russian variation (4.Qb3) [D81], where White played the rather aggressive 16.Nd5!? After an exchange series it was clear that the game was a draw (34 m.). Aronian,Levon vs Dominguez Perez, Leinier (2717) was a Queen's Gambit Accepted with 6... a6 (here 5 ... a6 by move interversion) [D27] of a real theoretical interest, with a very long and difficult endgame (1-0 in 92 m.).

Teimour Radjabov (with White), visibly lacking of fitness in the beginning of the present tournament, loses his second game against Grischuk, Alexander, a Queen's Indian, 5.Bg2 Be7, with 6.d5 [E17]. For a pawn sacrifice he did not obtain a sufficient compensation and after one or two inaccurate White moves (23.b4?!) Black takes definitively the advantage (0-1 in 41).

Again short commentaries for this round because we wish dedicate all our day time to an attentive analysis of the superp Magnus's victory against Vishy Anand the current World Chess Champion. Ivanchuk, Vassily vs Dominguez Perez, Leinier Reti Opening 1...c5 [A04] was a draw in 47 moves, in spite of a White winning advantage.

The interesting game Wang Yue vs Radjabov, Teimour King's Indian Defense [E92] was the occasion of a long battle for the initiative, where both sides played rather accurately. The game finished with a Knight endgame (draw in 41). In Grischuk, Alexander vs Aronian, Levon, the Armenian GM introduced the new idea: 15...0-0 where judiciously Black gives back his extra-pawn in a well-known theoretical position (Anti-Moscow Gambit). In spite of a White initiative, this is only after 38...Qd6? that Black knew serious trouble (1-0 in 59).

Anand, Viswanathan (2791) vs Grischuk, Alexander (2733) was a King's Indian, Saemish, Panno main line [E84], where Anand played the rare 3.f3 in view to avoid the Gruenfeld Defense. After late White castling (21.0-0) the position is balanced (½-½ in 37 m.). Radjabov, Teimour (2761) against Carlsen, Magnus (2776) was a (relatively!) quiet Giuoco Piano, with 5.d3 a6 [C53] (½-½ in 34 m.).

Dominguez Perez, Leinier (2717) vs Wang Yue (2739) has been a Petrov, Nimzovich Attack (5.Nc3 [C42]. This was a long and interesting battle, where both sides played rather accurately, preserving all their chances (½-½ in 32 m.). Finally Aronian lost, for the second time in Linares 2009, in the game Aronian, Levon (2750) vs Ivanchuk, Vassily (2779) King's Indian, Gligoric-Taimanov System (7.Be3) [E92]. In the endgame, with a Rook and a Bishop on both sides and a Black Knight against three White extra-pawns, the Ivanchuk's Knight proved to be the strongest (0-1 in 44 m.)

  •   -   Ciudad de Linares (ESP), 2009   -
In this first round of the second part of Linares Chess 2009, four games have been very hard fights, but three ended by a draw. The main event is that Levon Aronian beats Magnus Carlsen with Black. This game was again a QGD Semi-Slav, Stolz variation, 6.Qc2 [D45], with 7.g4 but where Aronian chose the alternative answer: 7...h6; in the endgame, with a bad pawn structure, Carlsen was unable to defend his pawns of the Queen side and lost a pawn (0-1 in 93 m.).

Ivanchuk, Vassily vs Wang Yue was a Petrov, Classical Attack with 8.c4 Nb4 [C42] (½-½ in 66 m.). The game Radjabov, Teimour vs Anand, Vishy was a QGD Semi-Slav, 5.Bg5 h6 6.Bh4 [D43], finishing by a balanced Rook endgame (½-½ in 47 m.). In Grischuk, Alexander vs Dominguez Perez, Leinier both players followed a Gruenfeld, Modern Exchange variation [D85]; in the middle game the confrontation between both Queens was particularly interesting to observe (½-½ in 47 m.).
