The Chess game exists only through time. According to a contemporary concept, that I do not challenge, Chess is a sport. Precisely it's a competitive sport. Indeed there is in Chess, under some aspect, confrontation, exchange of blows, fights for a victory. One should not however neglect that, in large majority of sports, the tempo, the rhythm of the exchanges, is more or less imposed by the nature of th competition.
Chess are connected, as for them, with sports of the spirit, where the concept of "time of reflection" intervenes. The Quality of answers goes then, quite naturally, being tributary of the available time. Thus, the Chess game is unic; we practise all the same sport of the spirit. Only the rhythmic change.
It would be permissible to adopt the principle of a fixed time per move. This could be defended, from a theoretical point of view. But would be, in practice, a nonsense. In fact, we know all that exist with Chess some moves forced, obvious, natural, risked, difficult, deep, extremely difficult, brillant, expriming the genius.
This report justifies to allocate a maximal RT (Reflection Time) for a certain number of moves. Then, nothing prevents a priori from admiting that the allotted RT is all time, arbitrarily selected, finished and nonnull. The remainder is only affair of traditions and conventions. This way we, people is accustomed to distinguish: the blitz, fast games, semi-rapid games, rate Fischer, play on line etc... and correspondence. These distinctions are convenient, certainly. But, they by no means call into question the play in itself.
I thus insist on the notorious fact that playing chess by correspondence is not an apart game, but the particalar expression which the "Noble Play" takes when allocated time is long. It is enough, to be convinced, to note that no theoretical argument would prevent from making use of any intermediate RT intervening between the clock, slow rate, and 60 days for 10 moves, now usual in national or international e-mail tournaments.
