Why thus, do we play Chess? With this naive question it was 100 times answered, without exhausting the subject and I will not do better in this respect. One will say readily for the pleasure. But, which is thus this pleasure which generates and distils so easily concern, stress, distresses, disillusion... and until the delicious pangs of the most total ruin.
Like this it's impossible - I mean not very realist - to evoke here small simple pleasures of the existence, whose the charm very often ends up disputing it with the boredom. But, rather the "vigourous" pleasures which bring to play a share of ourselves and imply, more or less, a certain threshold of risk. It's clear that the idea of risk is subjacent with any human activity. The risk frightens us and simultaneously fascine us, inherent which is with any explanation and demonstration of life. In fact we dispose of a considerable panoply of plays, sports or activities of all kinds, in order to frighten us and intensivity thus, as much as it's permissible, the feeeling which we have to be.
However, there is a major difference between the tangible life and these codified activities by which we try to channel our emotions. This way, the Chess game is travesty of life; each game engaged asserts a birth, a development, a combat, a risk... and with at stake one humiliating defeat or a transitory victory; unless a truce is concluded. Thus let us penetrate more in the heart of alchemy of the pangs and delights of which we are answerable to our preferred play. I analyze them as follows:
* Vis-a-vis with the starting position, whereas we are about to engage a new confrontation, we test a particular emotion, mixes of exaltation and concern, so much it is sign of regeneration, of rebirth. Thus of intact chance. * The beginning of the hostilities brings this rare satisfation to play almost perfect moves, guaranteed that they are by the Theory, while offering the luxery to personalize our own opening, by judicious choices in the inextricable ramification which it proposes. * The game which is spread is a combat. We fight against an adversary, but as much, if not more, against ourself. For a limited time, extract of the real life, all our forces, all our physical, psychic, moral and intellectual capacities are propped up towards the single derisory objective which is to win the game that we have engaged.
* The authentic life is a too complex big chess game; here well a long time that, in this respect, our ideals of absolute blunted. Through this life in reduction which irradies the chessboard, oportunity is offered to us to satisfy this thirst for perfection, coming from a lost paradise, of which we keep recollection and nostalgia. * But, men, we remain men, and this search of sublimity, unceasingly reinvented, deteriorates and is destroyed, while we produce a succession of mediocre moves, when they are not purely hateful; and yet, as long as it may be, the hope reappers and continues our tireless dream of going beyond. * And sometimes, suddenly, doubting the reality of what we observe, we take out the Great Game (in French: "sortir le Grand Jeu"): harmonious development, dominant position, durable initiative, brilliant combinations, masterly sacrifice, irrefutable conclusion... For a negligible moment of our tumultuous existence, we mix with God and the cohort of Angels!
* That a game is complete in the joy or sadness, sometimes even a confuse suffering, very often mingles a certain nostalgia because this "life" which dies out... But, already in our head resound the bugles of other engagements; of other possible victories. * And this enchantment ceaselessly is reflected and returns to us without end, reflection of our own image hardly deformed through the mirror of Time.
