«My biography: Denis Isakov was born 1977
in Kyiv. As a child, he loved painting and
sculpture. He completed the artistic school,
where he finally decided on the art by
choosing sculpture.
Since 1994 he has dedicated himself to
bone carving. Denis Isakov's artworks landed
in private collections in USA, Germany,
France, Russia, Czech Republic. In parti-
cular, some artworks can be found in
collections of Donald Trump, Celine Dion,
famous political figures. In his mini sculp-
tures, Denis Isakov gives preference to
realism, by abandoning generalised shapes
and stylisations, combining different ma-
terials, especially, semiprecious stones and
valuable wood with bone. In his sculptures,
he attaches a great importance to working
over details. This is a very laborious
process taking a lot of time. With each
new artwork, the master improves his ability
to animate dead materials and demonstrates
that bone carving is not a prerogative of
Japanese craftsmen.»
«The job description: Denis devoted six years
to creation of the unique chess set named
"The Third Crusade". It is made of a rib of an
ancient whale (Basilosaurus). This material is
over 30 million years old. Uniqueness of this
chess set is contributed to not only by their
design, but also by the value of the material
not to be found elsewhere. Therefore, it can
be claimed to be the only chess set of the
kind in the world.
The rib of the whale (Basilosaurus) is rather
fragile and difficult to work with. The subject
itself – The Third Crusade – is suggested by
the history. It took a lot of time to glean re-
quired information. These historical materials
were transferred to sketches of the future
pieces on paper, which in their turn were
transformed into shapes of modelling clay, to
be shaped in bone that forgives no mistakes.
This is a very long and laborious process,
which applies not only to the chess sets, but
also other sculptures of the master.
The Third Crusade is based on the confronta-
tion of the Moslem army led by Salah al-Din
and the Crusaders (mainly Englishmen) un-
der the leadership of King Richard the Lion-
heart of England. It depicts the battle fought
in the forest near Arsur in September 7, 1191.
Salah al-Din ambushed. For a long time, the
Crusaders were only on the defensive, but
when Richard lost his patience and comman-
ded to attack, Moslems took to flight. The
same battle is shown on bas reliefs around
the chess box. The bas reliefs themselves are
designed as a decoration to the forthcoming
show, and the gargoyles symbolise high for-
ces watching theevents on the board. Heads
of the main pieces have true likeness with
the real men.»
