[ The Soviet grandmaster Sveshnikov, specialist recognized in this variation, prefers to continue as follows: 13.Qf4 X64 g6 X65 14.Be3 X66 Bg7 X67 15.Bxb6 X68 Qxb6 X69 16.Qa4+ X70 Kf8= X71 Sveshnikov, Evgeny - Vyzmanavin, Alexey 1/2-1/2 (54) B22 Moscou 1987]

13...Qe2! X72

By this active move Black aims at obstructing the development of the White queenside, whereas he creates practically a threat of checkmate.

14.Bd2 X73 e6 X74

[ Interesting is the game : Duben, Igor (SVK) 2115 - Gutsche, Dieter (GER) EM/MA/110 ICCF Email 2000, which continues this way: 14...Rxd2 X75 15.Nxd2 X76 Qxd2 X77 16.Rfd1 X78 Qh6 X79 17.Qg3 X80 Qc6 X81 18.Rd3 X82 Qc8 X83 19.Rad1 X84 f6 X85 20.Rd8+ X86 Qxd8 X87 21.Rxd8+ X88 Kxd8 X89 22.Qb8+ X90 Nc8 X91 23.Qxb7 X92 We are here in an endgame Queen+pawn against Rook+Bishop+Knight; it seems clear that the protected passed pawn c3 will make the difference; let us follow this instructive endgame: 23...e6 X93 24.c4 X94 Be7 X95 25.b4 X96 Re8 X97 26.c5! X98 The advance of the c-pawn is really the strongest White asset 26...Bf8 X99 27.Qf7 X100 a6 X101 28.g3 X102 Be7 X103 29.c6! X104 1-0;
Sveshnikov, following this line he knows so well, signed one of his more beautiful performance in the game Sveshnikov, Evgeny 2515 - Kuzmin, Gennadi P 2505 B22 URS - ch sf Tashkent 1984, which continues thus: 14...f6 X105 15.Re1 X106 Rxd2 X107 16.Nxd2 X108 Qxd2 X109 17.Qh5+ X110 g6 X111 18.Qa5 X112 Qd7 X113 19.Qxa7 X114 Nc8 X115 20.Qa5 X116 e6 X117 21.c4 X118 Qc6 X119 22.Rxe6+! X120 There is not a better move 22...Qxe6 X121 23.Re1 X122 Qxe1+ X123 24.Qxe1+ X124 and you attend here a fine endgame Queen+2 pawns against Rook+Bishop+Knight which is worth the turning: 24...Kd7 X125 25.Qd2+ X126 Kc7 X127 26.Qf4+ X128 Bd6 X129 27.Qxf6 X130 Re8 X131 28.Kf1 X132 b6 X133 29.a3 X134 Na7 X135 30.b4 X136 Nc6 X137 31.g3 X138 Ne5 X139 32.Qg7+ X140 Re7 X141 33.Qg8 X142 Nc6 X143 34.Qa8 X144 Nd8 X145 35.Qd5 X146 Re5 X147 36.Qg8 X148 Re7 X149 37.f4 X150 Rf7 X151 38.Kg2 X152 Bf8 X153 39.h4 X154 Be7 X155 40.Qe8 X156 Bd6 X157 41.Qb5 X158 Rf5 X159 1-0
In this type of endgame, we are impressed by the power and mobility of the Queen. It should be noted that in this second game, although White has two pawns moreover, instead of one, the winning was much less obvious, taking into account a pawn-structure definitively less favorable.]

15.Re1 X160 Qb5=/+

Black refuses here the exchange of Queens in the idea to rather seek complications; but the fact is that they will not find any!

Black and White forces offset each other and the equality goes from oneself. Both Queens are active, whereas Rooks of each camp are not coordinated and that the minor pieces are not really developed.

X161 One must in addition put the finger on the structural advantage available to White with his majority on the queenside. [ It is also usual to play: 15...Qd3 X162 (Sveshnikov, Evergeny 2505 - Ionov, Sergey 2200 1-0 (43) B22 URS - ch sf Volgodonsk 1983); 15...Qc4 X163 (Novak, Ivan - Biro, Karol 1/2-1/2 (78) B22 SVK - ch Bratislava 1986)]

16.Bc1N X164

This answer original and even surprising is by no means faulty. [ Various answers were tested, but the more current is: 16.b3 X165 (for example : Zhichkin, Dmitry - Yevseev, Denis 1/2-1/2 (26) Vadsosjakken op 1996]

16...Be7 X166 17.Qg4 X167 0-0 X168

Black considers himself lucky to be able to castle now. [ Less good is: 17...Bf6 X169 18.Nd2 X170 0-0 X171 19.Ne4 X172 Be5 X173 20.a4 X174 Qc6 X175 21.Ng5 X176 Bb8 X177 with a balanced game]

18.Nd2 X178

[ I had also considered: 18.Na3 X179 Qa4 X180 19.Qxa4 X181 Nxa4 X182 20.Nc4 X183 ]

18...Rd7 X184 19.a4 X185 Qa6 X186 20.Nf3 X187 Qc4 X188

Black tries to cause the exchange of Queens, thinking this time of having a higher position.

21.Bf4! X189

[ On 21.Qxc4?! X190 Nxc4 X191 22.b3 X192 Na5 X193 23.Ne5 X194 Rc7!=/+ X195 White has some problems.]

21...Bd6 X196 22.Nd4! X197

Unquestionabily White has a very precise play. This solid Knight blocks the d-file, depriving Black of the possibility to exploit this one, as he had the intention of doing so.

22...Bxf4 X198 23.Qxf4 X199 Rfd8 X200 24.h3 X201

By this typical triangular manoeuvring the Black Knight will position in view to provoke the exchange with his White colleague.

24...Nd5 X202 25.Qg3 X203 a6 X204 26.a5 X205 Ne7 X206 27.Re4= X207

There is no more great a deal to hope: this game becomes exhausted at sight of eye. [
I had analyzed this way towards the draw: 27.Kh2 X208 Nc6! X209 The best way to get the draw. Black estimates not to be able to win this game and considers that the White majority on the Queen side may be more or less dangerous for him during the endgame; in particular if the White King would menage to become active. 28.Nxc6 X210 bxc6 X211 29.Rad1 X212 h6 X213 30.Rxd7 X214 Rxd7 X215 31.Re5 X216 c5 X217 32.Qe3 X218 Rd5 X219 33.Rxd5 X220 Qxd5 X221 34.Qf4 X222 Qd8 X223 35.b4 X224 cxb4 X225 36.Qxb4 X226 Qd5 X227 37.Qb6 X228 Qc4 X229 Draw!!]

27...Qc8! X230

The best before to post the Knight on the c6-square: the end of the journey.

28.Rae1 X231 Nc6 X232 29.Nxc6 X233

On this move White has proposed the draw. I accepted with great pleasure, always a little anxious about the White majority at the queenside. But a serious analysis proves that, in the present case, there was noting to fear. [ After : 29.Nxc6 X234 it could have followed: 29...Qxc6 X235 Of course in order to not destroy the structure of Black pawns of the queenside 30.Rg4 X236 g6 X237 31.Rb4 X238 Rd5 X239 32.Rb6 X240 Qc8 X241 33.b4 X242 Rd3 X243 34.Re3 X244 Rd1+ X245 35.Kh2 X246 R8d7 X247 36.Qf4 X248 R1d5 X249 37.Rf3 X250 Rf5 X251 38.Qg4 X252 Qc7+ X253 39.g3 X254 Rd2 X255 40.Kg2 X256 Qxc3 X257 41.Rxf5 X258 exf5 X259 42.Qf3 X260 Qxf3+ X261 43.Kxf3 X262 Rd7 X263 and Black has a very little advantage. 44.b5 X264 axb5 X265 45.Rxb5 X266 Kg7 X267 46.Kf4 X268 Rd4+ X269 ( or still: 46...Re7 X270 47.h4 X271 Kh6 X272 48.f3 X273 Kh5 X274 49.Rb6 X275 Rc7 X276 50.Ke3 X277 h6 X278 51.Rb5 X279 f6 X280 52.Kd3 X281 Rf7 X282 53.Kc3 X283 Re7 X284 54.Kd3 X285 Re5 X286 55.Kc4 X287 Re7 X288 ( 55...Re3 X289 56.Rxb7 X290 Rxf3 X291 57.Rb3 X292 Kg4 X293 ) 56.Kd3 X294 Rc7 X295 57.Kd4= X296 ) 47.Ke5 X297 Draw;

Let us notice to finish that the alternative 29.Rg4 X298 g6 X299 30.Nxc6 X300 Qxc6 leads also surely to the draw.] 1/2-1/2
