X0 Queen's gambit declined. Slav defence. Kasparov variation.

1.d4 X1 Nf6 X2 2.c4 X3 c6 X4 3.Nc3 X5 d5 X6 4.Nf3 X7 a6 X8

[ It's usual here to enter in a semi-Slav formation. For example: 4...e6 X9 5.Bg5 X10 h6 X11 6.Bxf6 X12 Qxf6 X13 7.e4 X14 dxe4 X15 8.Nxe4 X16 Bb4+ X17 9.Ke2 X18 Qf4 X19 10.Qd3= X20 Michenka, J 2339 - Volodim, V 2248 1/2-1/2 (61) D43 Friendship MI 2003]

5.c5 X21 g6 X22

[ The main line of the present variation continues as follows: 5...Nbd7 X23 6.Bf4 X24 Nh5 X25 7.e3 X26 g6 X27 8.Bd3 X28 Bg7 X29 9.0-0 X30 0-0 X31 10.Bg5 X32 That way: Gymesi, Z (2553) - Rotstein, A (2519) 0-1 (38) D15 Autriche (ch. equip.) 2004 ]

6.h3 X33 Bg7 X34 7.Bf4 X35 0-0 X36 8.e3 X37 b5 X38

[ It's usual here, for Black, to play the Queen's Knight. An illustration is: 8...Nbd7 X39 9.Bd3 X40 Re8 X41 10.Bh2 X42 Nh5 X43 11.g4 X44 Nhf6 X45 12.Rc1 X46 b6 X47 13.cxb6 X48 Qxb6 X49 14.Na4 X50 Qa5+ X51 15.Kf1 X52 Kasparov, Garry (2805) - Kundin, Alexander (2295) 1-0 (33) D15 Tel Aviv sim 1994]

9.cxb6 X53 Qxb6 X54 10.Qb3N X55

An interesting Lautier's idea. Like the Black Queen is the most active piece of her camp, it's tempting for White to exchange the Queens. If Black accepts the exchange, White gets a more dynamic game, which compensates the disadvantage of a damage pawn-structure on the Queen's side.
[ The game Lisko, Frantisek (2339) - Cibulka, Wladimir (2309) 1/2-1/2 (25) D15 SVK -chT Slovakia 2000 continues by an active White's play: 10.Nd2 X56 Nbd7 X57 11.Na4 X58 Qa5 X59 12.Rc1 X60 Ne4 X61 13.a3 X62 Nxd2 X63 14.b4 X64 Qd8 X65 15.Qxd2 X66 e5 X67 16.dxe5+/= X68 We notice many similarities with the above Kasparov's game, except that the Queen in a5 does not give check, and so White's King is not uncastled.]

10...Qa7?! X69

This retreat is certainly doubtful and constitutes a significant concession to White concerning the initiative.

11.Bd3+/= X70 c5? X71

A surprising fault for a great player like Epishin. All take place like if With was in a hurry to put at stake their Queen, without take into consideration all the consequences.

12.Nxd5! X72

Evidently !

12...Nxd5 X73 13.Qxd5 X74 Be6 X75 14.Qxc5 X76 Qxc5 X77 15.dxc5 X78 Nc6 X79 16.0-0! X80

Joel Lautier, in this confortable position, chooses a quite move. [ In other respects, strong seems to be: 16.Ng5!? X81 Bd5 X82 17.Be4 X83 Bxe4 X84 18.Nxe4 X85 Bxb2 X86 19.Rb1 X87 Ba3 X88 20.0-0 X89 ]

16...Rfd8 X90 17.Be4 X91 Rac8 X92 18.Rad1 X93 Rxd1 X94 19.Rxd1 X95 Bxb2 X96 20.Rb1 X97 Ba3 X98 21.Nd4 X99 Bxa2 X100 22.Rb6 X101 Nb4 X102 23.c6 X103 Bd5 X104 24.Bxd5 X105 Nxd5 X106 25.Rxa6 X107

Now the c6-pawn makes all the difference.

25...Bb2? X108

[ Black may always extract the draw by playing: 25...Bc5 X109 26.Nb3 X110 Bb6 X111 27.e4 X112 Bxf2+ X113 28.Kxf2 X114 Nxf4 X115 29.Nc5 X116 f6 X117 30.Kf3 X118 g5 X119 ]

26.Nb5! X120 Nb4 X121 27.Na7!+- X122

The only good replay in view to win.

27...Nxa6 X123 28.Nxc8 X124 e5 X125 29.Bg5 X126

the better move

29...Kf8 X127 30.Nd6 X128 Ba3 X129 31.Nb5 X130

The White's Knight is sovereign!

31...Be7 X131 32.c7! X132

Fine point!

32...Nxc7 X133 33.Bxe7+ X134 Kxe7 X135 34.Nxc7 X136 Kd6 X137 35.Nb5+ X138 Kc5 X139 36.Nc3 X140

Any way a Knight is faster than a King.

36...Kc4 X141 37.Ne4 X142 f5 X143 38.Ng5 X144 h5 X145 39.h4 X146 Kd5 X147 40.Kf1 X148 e4 X149 41.Ke1

With a Knight more and four pawns like his opponent, White wins now easily. 1-0
