Adams, M (2737) - Anand, V (2785)
[C42] - M-TEL SUPER MASTERS, Sofia
2005, Sofia (BUL), 21.05.2005

(Annotation: "Chess-Theory")

X0 1.e4 X1 e5 X2 2.Nf3 X3 Nf6 X4

Petrov' s defence is a deep and rather technical opening, always very appreciated at strongest level.

3.Nxe5 X5 d6 X6 4.Nf3 X7 Nxe4 X8 5.d4 X9

In his book devoted to the Petrov, Anatoly Karpov makes the following remark : "Currently, at a high level, there is nearly only Spassky to play the old move" : [ 5.Qe2 X10 ]

5...d5 X11 6.Bd3 X12 Nc6 X13 7.0-0 X14 Be7 X15 8.c4 X16

Karpov: "White attacks directly on the centre".

8...Nb4 X17 9.Be2! X18 (According to Karpov) 9...0-0 X19 10.Nc3 X20 Bf5 X21

[ The main alternative move is : 10...Be6 X22 For example: 11.Ne5 X23 f6 X24 12.Nf3 X25 Kh8 X26 13.h3?! X27 f5! X28 14.a3 X29 Nc6 X30 15.Nxd5 X31 Bxd5 X32 16.cxd5 X33 Qxd5 X34 =/+ (Ivanchuk, V.-Ponomariov,R., 1/2-1/2 C42, FIDE - wch k.o., 2002, comment: ChessBase, Knaac)]

11.a3 X35 Nxc3 X36 12.bxc3 X37 Nc6 X38 13.Re1 X39 Re8 X40 14.cxd5 X41 Qxd5 X42 15.Bf4 X43 Rac8 X44

The present line is explored only since 2002.

16.Bg3 X45

Very exciting is the game:

[ 16.c4 X46 Qe4 X47 17.Be3 X48 Bf6 X49 18.Ra2 X50 b6 X51 19.h3 X52 Na5 X53 20.g4!? an agressive move in the Kasparov' s style X54 (ChessBase, Ftacknik) (Kasparov, G-Adams, M, 1-0, C42, Linares 19th, 2002) ]

16...Bd6 X55 17.Nd2 X56 Bxg3 X57 18.hxg3 X58 Na5 X59 19.Qa4!?N X60

A Theoretical Novelty (www.mtelmasters.com)

19...Bd7 X61 20.Qc2 X62 b6 X63 21.Bd3 X64 h6 X65 22.Bh7+ X66 Kf8 X67 23.Be4 X68 Qd6

This position is quite interesting and deserves some comments. Pawn-structure is strongly dyssymetric between both sides, White and Black.

It' s the start point of our reflection. The e-file is open and opposites Rooks e1 and e8 are able to neutralize each other. We notice also that d4 is a candidat pawn (Hans Kmoch).

But this isn' t, in our opinion, the main fact related to this position. Effectively, look attentively at the c-file. Many significant features may be identified on it :

i) White Queen and the Queen side Black Rook occupy this one.
ii) Control of c4-square is among main stakes of this game.
iii) The most mobile and powerful pawn on the chessboard is evidently the c7-pawn ; in particular on account of the threat c7-c5, creating the famous "Tarrasch' s lever": d4-c5 (NCT: New Chess Theory)

For all this reasons it' s justified to consider that the c-file is a "critical line" (NCT).

X69 24.Nf3 X70 Be6 X71 25.Ne5 X72 Bb3! X73

Anand declared, after this encounter : "In the opening I was under slight pressure but after this move, 26...c5 and 27...Rcd8 I took the initiative." Nevertheless, Adams expressed an opinion of a slightly different kind : "This game was never completely equal".

26.Qe2 X74 c5 X75

Evidently! ... Notice that d4 is a critical point (NCT).

27.Qg4 X76

Very logical ; the best way to compensate Black initiative on the Queen side is effectively to tempt a vigorous action on the King side.

27...Rcd8! X77

The best move and not very easy to find. d4 is now the most significant critical point and Black exerts strong influence on it. [ Not so good is: 27...Red8?! X78 28.Bf5! X79 Rc7 X80 29.dxc5 X81 bxc5 X82 30.Re3= X83 ]

28.Bf5 X84 cxd4 X85 29.cxd4 X86 Nc6 X87 30.Nxc6 X88 Rxe1+ X89 31.Rxe1 X90 Qxc6 X91 32.Qe2 X92 Qd6 X93

Time: 00:23:01 - 00:59:19 (www.mtelmasters.com)

33.Qf3 X94 Bc4 X95 34.Qe3

The d4-pawn is rather weak... Most generally it' s clear Black has a better pawn X96 structure.

34...Bb5 X97

With the idea: Ba4 controlling the d1-square.

35.Rd1 X98 Ba4 X99 36.Rd2 X100 Re8 X101 37.Qc3 X102 h5!!

A not spectacularly but very deep move rather dificult to find!... Anand judges with reason the White Bishop isn' t well posted in f5 and doesn' t dispose many useful squares.

X103 However, another deep idea in Anand' s 37th move is certainly to prepare the h-file opening.

38.Qc1 X104 Qe7 X105

Fundamental is now the control of g5-square. On another aspect Black Queen attacks now the isolated pawn a3.

39.Qc3 X106 Qg5 X107 40.Bh3!? X108

A critical choice ; is it a good idea ? It is not very clear. In any case Black keeps a not inconsiderable advantage.

40...Kg8 X109 41.d5 X110

The d-pawn is not really dangerous because the Black Bishop keep the control of the strategic d7-square.

41...f5 X111 42.d6 X112 Bd7 X113

Anand execute, with an admirable technical, his clear plan.

43.Rd1 X114 Qg6 X115 44.Qc7 X116 Qe6 X117 45.Qxa7 X118 b5 X119 46.Qc5 X120 g5 X121 47.g4? X122

[ In Kramnik opinion : 47.Bxf5 X123 is obligatory (www.mtelmasters.com)]

47...hxg4 X124

At the present time the game is over!... In any case Black wins easily.

48.Bxg4 X125 fxg4 X126 49.Qxg5+ X127 Kh7 X128 50.Qh5+ X129 Kg7 X130 51.Qg5+ X131 Qg6 X132 52.Qc5 X133 Qf6 X134 53.Qa7 X135 Qf5 X136 54.Qd4+ X137 Kg6 X138 55.Qc3 X139 Qe5 X140 56.Qd3+ X141 Kg7 X142 57.Qc2 X143

With the idea: Qc7

57...Rh8! X144

Evidently

58.Qc7 X145

Yes, but it' s too late ; Oh! Indeed, just a move too late!

58...Qh2+ X146 59.Kf1 X147 Qh1+ X148 60.Ke2 X149 Re8+

Without any doubt, main features of this technical and strategic game are :

i) Pawn structure.
ii) Pawn mobility.
iii) Opening the e-file and later the h-file.
iv) Critical c-file.
v) Bishops of the same color.
X150 vi) The d-pawn is rather weak and unable to get the promotion.

[ After: 60...Re8+ X151 the game may continue this way: 61.Kd2 X152 Qh6+ X153 62.Kd3 X154 Qg6+ X155 63.Kd2 X156 Qg5+ X157 64.Kd3 X158 Qf5+ X159 65.Kd2 X160 ( 65.Kc3 X161 Rc8 X162 ) 65...Qxf2+ X163 66.Kc3 X164 Rc8 ] 0-1
