Adams,M (2737) - Topalov,V (2778)
[B91] - M-TEL SUPER MASTERS, Sofia
2005, Sofia (BUL), (7), 19.05.2005

(Annotation: "Chess-Theory")

X0 1.e4 X1 c5 X2 2.Nf3 X3 d6 X4 3.d4 X5 cxd4 X6 4.Nxd4 X7 Nf6 X8 5.Nc3 X9 a6 X10 6.g3 X11

We recognize the Sicilian Najdorf, Zagreb variation (fianchetto).

6...e5

This variation is known since 1948 and is always frequently played near at all level ; in fact rarelly by super-GM, exepted Adams!.

The most classical White' s answer is naturally 7.Nde2 ("Szabo-Najdorf" variation in the ECB classification). It' s possible to play 7.Nf3?! or 7.Nf5?! but both moves haven' t a great success.

The other significant retort is 7.Nb3 (Reshevsky-Najdorf variation in the ECB classification) ; this one appears near 1950 and its success is always growing.

X12 In current high level tournaments both variations are frequently played and it' s difficult to decide what is the better choice?

7.Nb3 X13

We point out it' s really the Adams' favorite move, because he has played only this one during this last years.

[ For a recent game after: 7.Nde2 X14 we notice the interesting draw: 7...Nbd7 X15 8.a4 X16 b6 X17 9.Nd5 X18 Nxd5 X19 10.Qxd5 X20 Rb8 X21 11.Nc3 X22 Be7 X23 12.Bg2 X24 0-0 X25 13.0-0 X26 Bb7 X27 14.Qd1 X28 Rc8 X29 15.Qe2 X30 = (Ivanov, A (2537) - Najer, E (2602), 1/2-1/2 (51) B91, Moskow Aeroflot op, 2004).]

7...Nbd7 X31

Clearly a thematic move, totally in the spirit of this line. ECB classification: B91-a*

[ Najdorf' s choice, playing against Reshevsky, was: 7...Be6 X32 and after : 8.Bg2 X33 Nbd7 X34 9.0-0 X35 Rc8 X36 10.h3 X37 b5 X38 11.g4 X39 Bc4 X40 12.Re1 X41 b4 X42 both players reached an equal game (Reshevsky, S - Najdorf, M, 1/2 - 1/2, B91, Dubrovnik ol (men), 1950). ]

8.Bg2 X43 b5 X44 9.0-0 X45 Be7 X46 10.a4 X47

[ Another way is: 10.Nd5!? X48 Nxd5 X49 11.exd5 X50 a5!? X51 12.a4 X52 b4 X53 13.Bd2 X54 Bg5 X55 14.f4 X56 Bf6 X57 15.c3 X58 bxc3 X59 16.Bxc3 X60 0-0 X61 17.Ra3?! X62 Qb6+ X63 18.Kh1 X64 exf4 X65 19.Nd4!? X66 Nc5! X67 (Movsesian, S (2631) - Kasparov, G (2838), 1/2-1/2 (36), B91, Eurotel Trophy Simul, 2001 ; com: Movsesian ; ChessBase)]

10...b4 X68 11.Na2 X69 a5 X70 12.c3 X71 bxc3 X72 13.Nxc3 X73

We find the same position in the game: Takhirov, V (2176) - Biruikov, O (2384) 1/2-1/2, B91), Petroff men ol, 2000.

13...Nb6N X74

An interesting novelty. Black keeps the control of the c4-square. In fact we point out that f6-d7-b6-c4 is a Knight "Traffic lane" (NCT: New Chess Theory) available for Black.

14.Nb5 X75 0-0 X76 15.Bd2 X77 Nc4 X78 16.Bc3 X79 Be6 X80

Topalov organizes an active figural attack on the queenside. His plan is obvious!

17.Re1 X81 Qb8 X82 18.Nd2! X83

This Adams' move is a good choice.

18...Rc8 X84 19.b3 X85 Nxd2 X86 20.Qxd2 X87 Nd7 X88 21.Reb1 X89 Nc5 X90 22.Qd1 X91 Ra6 X92 23.b4 X93

Adams continues to counter effectively Topalov' s attack.

23...axb4 X94 24.Bxb4 X95 Qa8 X96 25.Nc3 X97 Bd8 X98 26.Bf1 X99 Ra7 X100 27.Nb5! X101 Rd7 X102 28.Nxd6 X103 Rc6 X104 29.Bxc5 X105 Rxc5 X106 30.Bb5 X107 Rdc7 X108 31.a5 X109 g6 X110

In this complicated middlegame it seems White and Black have similar chances.

32.a6 X111 Bg5 X112 33.h4 X113 Be7 X114 34.Ne8 X115 Ra7 X116 35.Qd2?! X117

A surprising move, not very accurate!

[ Seems better: 35.Qa4 X118 Qc8 X119 36.Qa5! X120 Ra8 X121 37.a7 X122 Bc4 X123 38.Qb6 X124 Bxb5 X125 39.Rxb5 X126 Rxb5 X127 40.Qxb5 X128 Bc5 X129 41.Kg2 X130 +/= and now White has certainly a good game.]

35...Rxb5! X131

Effectively!

36.Rxb5 X132 Qxe8 X133 =/+ 37.Rb7 X134 Bc5 X135 38.Ra5 X136

[ Playing 38.Qc2 X137 White gets easily the draw. For exemple: 38...Qc8 X138 39.Rxa7 X139 Bxa7 X140 40.Qxc8+ X141 Bxc8 X142 41.Rc1 X143 Bxa6 X144 42.Ra1 X145 Bxf2+ X146 43.Kxf2 X147 Bc4 X148 44.g4 X149 Kg7 X150 45.Kf3 X151 Kf6 X152 46.g5+ X153 Ke6 X154 47.Ra8 X155 Bb5 X156 48.Rh8 X157 f5 X158 49.gxf6 X159 Kxf6 X160 50.Rxh7 X161 Bc4= X162 ]

38...Qc8 X163 39.Rxa7 X164 Bxa7 X165 40.Kh2 X166

[ We reach equally the draw after: 40.h5!? X167 Qb8 X168 41.h6 X169 Kf8 X170 42.Kg2 X171 Ke7 X172 43.Qe2 X173 in view to control white diagonals a6-f1 and d1-h5 ; in particular the c4-square 43...Qb6 X174 44.Rxe5 X175 f6 X176 45.Rb5 X177 Qxa6 X178 46.Qb2= X179 ]

40...Qc7 X180 41.Kg2 X181 h5 X182 42.Ra1 X183 Qc4! X184

An active position for the Black Queen. In this endgame Black has the initiative and, in particular, dominates on white squares.

43.Qe1 X185 Qd3 X186 44.Ra5 X187 Bg4 X188 45.Kh2 X189

Influence of Black figures is growing in this positional endgame.

45...Kh7 X190 46.Ra2 X191 Bf3 X192 47.Ra5 X193 Qc2 X194 48.Kg1 X195 Kg7 X196 49.Rd5 X197 Bxe4 X198 50.Rd2 X199 Qc4 X200 51.Kh2 X201 Qc3 X202 52.Qe2 X203 Bd4 X204

Black Bishops dominate completly the chessboard.

53.Ra2 X205 Ba8 X206 54.Qd1 X207 Qc4

Since many moves, White is reduced to a defensive position and has any good move to play.In another aspect the White Queen is offside and the White Rook is unable to defend simultaneously the weak pawns a6 and f2.

All this endgame illustrates marvellously the superiority of Bishop pair against a lone Rook. But equally the deep Topalov' s strategic understanding. 0-1
