X21 About this game, let us notice that 6.e4 is not a gambit because the Black Knight f6 is relatively pinned ; The Lichtenhein Gambit, played from time to time, is constituted by the move: 3.e4!? X22 This gambit may be accepted or declined like in the game: 3...d6 X23 4.Bd3 X24 fxe4 X25 5.Bxe4 X26 Nf6 X27 6.Nc3 X28 g6 X29 7.Nf3 X30 Bg7 X31 8.Ng5 X32 0-0 X33 9.f4 X34 h6 X35 10.Nf3 X36 Nxe4 X37 11.Nxe4 X38 Bf5 X39 12.Ng3 X40 Lichtenhein, T - Raphael, B A43 (25) 1-0, USA-01 Kongress playoff-3pl New York (3), 1857.]

3...Nf6 X41

ECB (ECO Codes Base) Classification: [A43-l]

4.Nc3 X42 d6 X43

This position is well known since 1949 and many White retorts have been tested:

In our opinion this gambit is a rather strong novelty! Effectively this move intervene in the core of the problem concerning all this position. We mean the occupation or the control of the e4-square.

This move is played here for the first time by the young Belgian chess player Olivier Baudoin (19 years old!) from Anderlues Belgium.

X60 Also it is right to name this move "Baudoin Gambit"!

[ 5.Nf3 X61 A classic answer 5...e5 X62 6.dxe6 X63 Bxe6 X64 7.Qa4+ X65 Welchert, P - stephan, Werner A43 (44) 1/2-1/2, OWL-ch Buende 1949);
5.Nh3! X66 Interesting idea 5...g6 X67 6.Nf4 X68 Na6 X69 7.h4 X70 Nc7 X71 8.g3 X72 Rb8 X73 9.a4 X74 b6 X75 10.Bg2 X76 Cramling, Pia (2515) - Spragett, Kevin (2550) A43 (36) 1-0, ESP-chT Cala Galdana 1994;
5.e3!? X77 This option is not very ambitious 5...g6 X78 6.Bd3 X79 Bg7 X80 7.Nf3 X81 Na6 X82 8.a3 X83 0-0 X84 9.Qc2 X85 Nc7 X86 10.Ng5 X87 Elka, Parviz - Johansen, Kjell Arne A43 (32) 0-1, NOR-ch M2 Norway 1997;
5.f3 X88 A secondary choice, not very probative; nevertheless this move contribute to the control of the e4-square (Martyn, Rafe (2126) - Farley, Andrew (1760) A43 (33) 1-0, Smith & Williamson YM-B (11) 2001;
5.Qc2!? X89 Rather interesting; the idea, in particular, is to reinforce the control of the strategic e4-square. 5...e6 X90 6.g3 X91 exd5 X92 7.cxd5 X93 Na6 X94 8.Bg2 X95 Nc7 X96 +/= Kapstan, Aron (2170) - Hassain, Mahmud A43 (49) 1-0, Winnipeg Kent Oliver mem 1998;
5.Bg5 X97 Again with the wishing to increase White control on the e4-square. 5...h6 X98 6.Bxf6 X99 exf6 X100 7.e3 X101 Qe7 X102 8.Bd3 X103 h5? X104 9.Nge2 X105 +/- Moranda, Wojciech - Baran, Peter A43 (29) 1-0 , Krakow op-E 1999;
5.g3! X106 The usual answer, with once more an intention concerning the control of the e4-square 5...g6 X107 6.Bg2 X108 Bg7 X109 7.Nh3 X110 Na6 X111 8.0-0 X112 0-0 X113 9.Nf4 X114 Nc7 X115 10.a4 X116 Rb8 X117 Lazarev, Vladimir (2458) - Sebastianelli, Dario (2221) A86 (39) 1-0, Porto San Giorgio op 14th,2002]

5...fxe4 X118 6.f3! X119

[ Was possible: 6.Nge2 X120 e5 X121 7.Ng3 X122 Be7 X123 8.Ngxe4 X124 Nxe4 X125 9.Nxe4~~ X126 But White favours to pursue in the spirit of a genuine gambit!]

6...exf3 X127 7.Nxf3 X128

White has a clear compensation for the pawn.

7...Bg4 X129

[ After 7...g6 X130 8.Bd3 X131 Bg7 X132 9.0-0 X133 0-0 X134 10.Bg5 X135 White and Black seems to have similar chances.]

8.Bd3 X136 Nbd7 X137 9.Qc2 X138

White has a good development and in particular a strong control on the strategic diagonal b1-h7. Furthermore he shuts a diabolic Trap (TRAP:).

9...Bxf3?? X139

Falling down in the trap!

10.Bg6+

1-0
