To understand the historical significance of this game we have to say that the same year de Saint Amand wined, in london, his first match againts Staunton.

X0 But the heavy defeat of de Saint Amant in the return match, in Paris, constituted pratically the end of his chess career and mostly represented the end of a Century and a Half of French domination on the Chess game.

1.d4 X1 c5 X2 2.d5 X3 f5 X4 3.Nc3N X5

The strong Staunton' s novelty. ECB (ECO Codes Base) Classification: [A43-m]

3...d6?! X6

After this relatively weak move White owns already a clear advantage.

[ For a modern treatment of this line we propose: 3...Nf6 X7 4.Nh3 X8 g6 X9 5.Nf4 X10 Bg7 X11 6.h4 X12 Kf7 X13 7.e4 X14 e5 X15 8.dxe6+ X16 dxe6 X17 9.Be3 X18 Nxe4 X19 10.Nxe4 X20 Qxd1+ X21 11.Rxd1 X22 fxe4 X23 12.c3 X24 b6 X25 13.h5 X26 g5 X27 14.h6 X28 Bf6 X29 15.Nh5 X30 Be7 X31 16.Be2 X32 Nd7 X33 +/= Greet Andrew (2310) - Summerscale, Aaron (2493) A43 ½-½, GBR-ch Scarborough, 2004.]

De Saint Amant chooses here the best answer, but his position is rather difficult to hold.

6.Bg5 X38 Qa5+ X39 7.c3 X40 Bf5 X41

[ Black encounter some difficulties after: 7...Qb6 X42 8.Rb1! X43 Be7 X44 9.b4 X45 cxb4 X46 10.Rxb4 X47 Qd8 X48 11.Bb5+ X49 Kf7 X50 +/-]

8.Ng3 X51 Bg6 X52 9.Bd3 X53 Bxd3 X54

The only choice.

10.Qxd3 X55 g6? X56

A crucial mistake and certainly the turning of this game; now the Black King is not safe.

[ Better is: 10...Be7 X57 11.Nh3 X58 Qb6 X59 12.0-0 X60 Nd7 X61 13.Nf5 X62 Bf8 X63 14.Rab1 X64 g6 X65 and Black can organize a defense.]

11.N1e2 X66 Be7 X67 12.Ne4 X68

Staunton plays with mastery and increase progressively his domination.

12...Qb6 X69 13.0-0 X70 Nd7 X71 14.Bxe7 X72 Nxe7 X73 15.Ng5 X74

[ Playing 15.Rab1 X75 0-0 X76 16.Qh3 X77 Nf5 X78 17.N2g3 X79 Nf6 X80 White maintains a significant advantage.]

15...h6 X81 16.Ne6 X82 Nf8 X83 17.Nxf8 X84 Rxf8 X85

It seems now that Black is able to organize en effective defense.

18.b4!? X86 cxb4 X87 19.cxb4 X88 Kf7?! X89

[ An active continuation for Black is: 19...Rc8! X90 20.a3 X91 Qa6!? X92 21.Qd2 X93 g5!= X94 ]

20.Kh1 X95 Kg7 X96 21.f4! X97

This Break Move (BREM:) is the best weapon available to White. Also we shall name now this typical pawn-formation: f4-e5 the Staunton Lever (STLV:).

21...Rad8? X98

A surprising mistake. Evidently one don't can blame de Saint Amant for missing applies Nimzovich and Reti principles!

[ Flagrantly: 21...Rae8= X99 allows Black to maintains the balance.]

22.Rad1 X100

With rhe idea to make the White Queen free from the protection of the d5-pawn.

22...h5 X101 23.Qc3 X102 Qb5 X103 24.Qd2 X104 Rf5? X105

Again the French player chooses an inaccurate move; but the present mistake may be determinative.

25.Ng3 X106 Rf6 X107

[ Only 25...Rf7 X108 allows an ultimate defense.]

26.fxe5 X109 Rxf1+ X110 27.Rxf1 X111 +-

This time White wins in any case.

27...dxe5 X112 28.Qg5 X113 Rd7 X114 29.Qxe5+ X115 Kh6 X116 30.Qh8+ X117 Kg5 X118 31.Ne4+ X119 Kh4 X120 32.Rf4#

The Staunton' s victory is obviously deserved and, in the middle of the IXXth Century, this great English player could be regarded as the new Unofficial World Chess Champion.
