X0 1.e4 X1 e6 X2 2.d4 X3 c5 X4 3.d5

With this pawn formation one encounters again the Korchnoi Lever (KOLV:) e5-d6.

Let us remark that the French Defense changes into an Old Benoni; accurately a French-Benoni.

X5 It is good to remind that generally speaking the Old Benoni Defense, and it is right in particular for the French-Benoni, is a good opening for White but is an insufficient begining for Black. But this one may try to improve his play by finding strong novelties!

3...exd5 X6 4.exd5 X7 d6 X8 5.c4 X9

ECB (ECO Codes Base) Classification: [A43-w].

[ The modern traitement is: 5.Nf3 X10 like in the game: 5...Be7 X11 6.c4 X12 Nf6 X13 7.Nc3 X14 0-0 X15 8.Bd3 X16 Bg4! X17 9.h3 X18 Bh5 X19 10.0-0 X20 Nbd7 X21 11.g4 X22 Bg6 X23 12.Bxg6 X24 hxg6 X25 13.Bf4 X26 a6 X27 14.a4 X28 Re8 X29 15.Re1 X30 Nf8 X31 16.Qd2 X32 Qd7 X33 17.Kg2 X34 N8h7 X35 +/= Nava Baro, Enrique (2218) - Tissir, Mohamed (2426) A43 (41) 0-1, Malaga 2005.]

5...Bf5 X36 6.Bd3 X37 Bxd3 X38 7.Qxd3 X39

All this play line is nowadays leaved, except in some minor games.

7...Nf6 X40 8.Nc3 X41 Be7 X42 9.Nf3 X43 0-0 X44 10.0-0 X45 Nbd7 X46

         H.Rottier & F.Rottier

Both camps are well developed and the play is balenced.

11.Qf5

An Initiative Move (INIM:) played with respect to the Staunton's Plan. The White Queen may now coordinate the White action on the Kingside.

X47 11...a6 X48 12.Ne2 X49 b5 X50

Staunton carries on an action on the Queenside; it is clearly his Plan (PLAN:).

13.b3!? X51 bxc4 X52 14.bxc4 X53 Rb8 X54

Without any delay Black occupies the open b-fine.

15.Rb1 X55

and White similarly; the fight for the Open File (OPFI:) begins only and is at the heart of the debat.

15...Rxb1 X56 16.Qxb1 X57 Qb6 X58 17.Qc2 X59 Rb8 X60

This way Black wins the Open File Fight (OPFF:) and White has to equilibrate by engaging one action on the Center or on the Kingside.

18.Ng3 X61 g6 X62 19.Re1 X63 Bf8 X64 20.Nd2 X65 Qb4 X66 21.a3 X67 Qa5 X68 22.f4 X69 Bg7 X70

The Black Bishop occupies a magnificent Free Line (FRLI:).

23.Nf3 X71 Ng4 X72 24.Re2

This position is an informative one by the crucial role played by three Free Lines (FRLI:), b and e-files and the diagonal a1-h8. They constitute the Critical Line (CRLI:) of this configuration.

X73 We notice in particular the Critical Points (CRPT:) b2, c3, e5. We are sure that the remarks clarify the understanding of all this position!

24...Qc3= X74 25.Ne4!? X75 Qa1 X76 26.Re1 X77 Bd4+!? X78

Staunton develops here a beautiful example of tentative of Penetration (PENE:) in the opponent' s camp. Black has not yet a winning game, but it is clear White is deprive of all perspective.

27.Kf1 X79 Re8 X80 28.g3 X81 f5! X82

The best defense!

29.Nxd6 X83 Re3! X84

[ Clearly stronger than: 29...Rxe1+ X85 30.Nxe1 X86 Nxh2+ X87 31.Kg2 X88 Ng4= X89 ]

30.Kg2 X90

Very accurate is all the White defense! Sincerely this game is a great one!

30...Rxe1 X91 31.Nxe1 X92 Ne3+ X93 32.Bxe3 X94

The only move!

32...Qxe1 X95 33.Bxd4 X96 cxd4 X97 34.c5= X98 Nxc5! X99

The game is a draw

35.Qxc5 X100 Qe2+ X101 36.Kg1 X102 Qe1+ X103 37.Kg2 X104 Qe2+

By the way, do you think White was lucky?
