Modern or Ufimtsev Defence

X0 [Blindfold time-limit: 25 minutes + 20 seconds added per move]

1.d4 X1 g6 X2 2.e4 X3 d6 X4 3.Nc3 X5 Nf6 X6 4.Be3 X7 c6 X8 5.h3 X9 Nbd7 X10 6.f4 X11 b5 X12 7.Bd3 X13 b4 X14 8.Nce2 X15 c5 X16

[ 8...d5 X17 9.e5 X18 Ne4 X19 is another line of play.]

9.Nf3 X20 Bg7 X21 10.dxc5 X22 Nxc5 X23 11.Bxc5 X24 dxc5 X25 12.e5 X26 Nd7 X27 13.Be4 X28 Rb8 X29 14.h4 X30 Qc7 X31 15.h5 X32 c4 X33 16.Qd4 X34

[ 16.h6 X35 Bf8 X36 17.Qd4 X37 e6 X38 18.0-0-0 X39 Ba6-/+ X40 ]

16...0-0 X41 17.hxg6 X42 hxg6 X43 18.Ng5 X44

Long castling is too dangerous for White.

18...Nc5 X45 19.Bd5 X46

[ 19.Qxc4 X47 Ba6 X48 20.Bxg6?! X49 ( 20.Qd5 X50 e6 X51 ( 20...Bb7 X52 21.Qc4 X53 Ba6 X54 22.Qd5 X55 Bb7 X56 23.Qc4 X57 Draw! ) 21.Qd6 X58 Qxd6 X59 22.exd6 X60 Bxb2-/+ X61 ) 20...Bxc4 X62 21.Bh7+ X63 Kh8 X64 22.Bd3+ X65 and Black can avoid the draw by repetition: 22...Bh6 X66 23.Rxh6+ X67 Kg7 X68 24.Rh7+ X69 Kg8 X70 25.Bxc4 X71 Ne4! X72 ( 25...e6 X73 26.0-0-0+/- X74 ) 26.Bxf7+ X75 Rxf7 X76 27.Rxf7 X77 Nxg5 X78 and Black is winning. I would be very surprised if these variations were calculated "blindfold" - but both these highly-talented and imaginative players may conceivably have done so!]

19...Bf5 X79 20.Qxc4 X80 e6 X81 21.Be4 X82 Rfd8 X83 22.Bxf5 X84 gxf5 X85 23.Rh3?! X86

[ Of course the Black King' s field is vulnerable: 23.Rh7 X87 with the idea Ng3-h5 and Ivanchuk gets in first with his attack. 23...Rd2 X88 (!) ( For example 23...Rb7 X89 24.Ng3 X90 Qa5 X91 25.Nh5 X92 Bh8 X93 26.Nf6+ X94 Bxf6 X95 27.exf6 X96 b3+ X97 28.Ke2 X98 bxc2 X99 29.Rg7+ X100 Kf8 X101 30.b4! X102 Rxb4 X103 ( 30...Qxb4 X104 31.Rxf7+ X105 ) 31.Rxf7+ X106 and mate.) 24.g4 X107 ]

23...Qa5 X108 24.Nd4 X109 Rbc8 X110

[ 24...b3+ X111 25.c3 X112 and the lines of attack are closed to Black.]

25.Nb3? X113

Very bad.

[ 25.Qb5!+/- X114 and Black cannot really avoid exchanging Queens; 25...Qc7 X115 26.Qxb4 X116 Bxe5 X117 27.fxe5 X118 Qxe5+ X119 28.Ne2+- X120 ]

25...Qb6 X121 26.Rd1 X122 Nxb3 X123 27.Rxd8+ X124 Rxd8 X125 28.axb3-+ X126 Qg1+ X127 29.Ke2 X128 Qxg2+ X129 30.Ke3 X130

[ 30.Ke1 X131 Qd2+ X132 31.Kf1 X133 Qd1+ X134 leads to mate.]

30...Bf8! X135

A great winning move: the Bishop returns to his original square!

31.Rh8+ X136 Kxh8 X137

[ 31...Kg7 X138 32.Rxf8 X139 and the worst is avoided.]

32.Nxf7+ X140 Kg8! X141

[ 32...Kg7 X142 leaves an eventual fork on e6 which would spoil the beautiful combination that Mamedyarov has prepared.]

33.Nxd8 X143 Bc5+! X144 34.Kd3 X145

[ 34.Qxc5 X146 Qg1+ X147 35.Kd3 X148 Qxc5 X149 and there is no fork with check on e6.]

34...Qf3+ X150 35.Kd2 X151 Be3+

and mate in two moves. The man from Baku was very pleased with this finish. These days tournament sites provide not only real-time game coverage, but also player interviews and game demonstrations: for the Amber event there were the high-class Euwe Foundation productions with nice musical backgrounds.

There were also videos made for Europe Echecs e.g. an interesting interview (in English) by Robert Fontaine with Mamedyarov after the above game. It' s rather a pity about some of their musical ambiance: I am not an expert in the field - but introductory theme and link music seemed more suited to a pornographic movie!
