X0 Queen' s Gambit Declinned (QGD): Symmetrical (Austrian) Defense

1.d4 X1 d5 X2 2.c4 X3 c5 X4 3.dxc5 X5

[ 3.Nf3 X6 is now most usual]

3...Qa5+?! X7

This too fast engagement of the Black' s Queen is rather favourable to White development

[ An usual reply in this confidential line of play is: 3...d4!? X8 4.b4 X9 a5 X10 5.Bb2 X11 axb4 X12 6.Nf3 X13 Nc6 X14 7.Nxd4 X15 Nf6 X16 8.g3 X17 e5 X18 9.Nxc6 X19 Qxd1+ X20 10.Kxd1 X21 bxc6 X22 11.Bg2 X23 Bb7= X24 Capablanca Jose Raul - Noliman Jorge 1-0 (D06) Buenos Aires casual 29/05/1911]

4.Qd2!? X25

[ Possible is: 4.Nc3 X26 dxc4 X27 5.e4 X28 Be6 X29 6.Nf3 X30 Nc6 X31 7.Be3 X32 +/= and White has a pleasant game.]

4...Qxd2+ X33

The Queen' s exchange is the only choice.

5.Nxd2 X34 dxc4 X35 6.Nxc4 X36 e6? X37

A serious mistake, unfavourable to Black development!... The c8-h3 diagonal is obstructed, while the strategic d6-square is leaved to White control.

7.Nd6+! X38

The strongest retort!

7...Bxd6 X39 8.cxd6 X40

All the question is now: White is it able to defend and promote his central passed pawn?... It seems it is capable to do that...

8...Nf6 X41 9.f3!?

This surprising move is not a fault and reveals the strategic vision of Greco, as well as the self-confident of the best chess player of his time.

X42 White may play Bf4-g3-f2 and, in the same time, squares e4 and g4 are prohibited to the Black King' s Knight.

[ After 9.Nf3 X43 Nc6 X44 10.Bf4 X45 Nb4 X46 11.Nd4! X47 Bd7 X48 12.a3 X49 Nbd5 X50 13.Be5 X51 +- White wins easily.]

9...0-0?? X52

Castling in such a position is frankly dangerous.

[ The right continuation is: 9...Kd7 X53 10.Bf4 X54 Nh5 X55 11.Be3 X56 Kxd6 X57 12.Rd1+ X58 Kc7 X59 13.g4 X60 Nf6 X61 14.Bf4+ X62 and White has a better game.]

10.e4 X63 e5 X64 11.b3 X65 Rd8 X66 12.Ba3 X67

[ 12.Bb2!? X68 ]

12...Ne8 X69 13.Rd1 X70 Be6 X71 14.Bc4?! X72

This time, Greco loses his advantage

14...Bd7?? X73

[ The accurate line leads probably to a draw : 14...Bxc4 X74 15.bxc4 X75 Nd7 X76 16.Kf2 X77 Rac8 X78 17.Ne2 X79 Rxc4= X80 ]

15.g3!? X81

Interesting anyway..

[ But 15.Ne2! X82 seems quite natural.]

15...b5 X83 16.Bd5 X84 Bc6 X85 17.Bc5 X86 Bxd5 X87 18.Rxd5 X88 Nd7 X89 19.b4! X90

In this curious game, Greco is engaged in an all-interesting and fine strategic play, organized around his passed isolated central d6-pawn. He reveals here some subtleties prefiguring the great Philidor and very far from the Italian style of playing, which, it' s true, was only at its beginning at the Greco' s time!

19...a5! X91

This counter-attack, in view to open the a-file, is a good idea.

[ The alternative move 19...Ndf6 X92 may be considered.]

20.a3 X93 axb4 X94 21.axb4 X95 Ra1+ X96 22.Kf2 X97 Rc1? X98

This bad move shows that Black has no good plan

[ Is without any doubt better 22...Nxc5 X99 23.bxc5 X100 b4 X101 24.Kg2 X102 Ra2+ X103 25.Kh3 X104 b3 X105 26.Rd3 X106 Rc2 X107 27.Ne2!? X108 Rxc5 X109 ( 27...Rxe2!? X110 28.Rb1 X111 b2 X112 29.Rb3 X113 Nxd6 X114 Leads probably to a draw. ) 28.Rb1 X115 Rxd6 X116 29.Rbxb3 X117 and the draw is practically evident.]

23.Kg2 X118 Nxc5 X119 24.bxc5 X120 b4 X121

[ 24...Rc2+ X122 25.Kh3 X123 b4 X124 26.Rxe5 X125 b3! X126 27.Re7 X127 Rxc5 X128 28.Rb7 X129 and an unclear endgame!]

25.Ne2! X130 Rc2 X131

The only move.

26.Kf2 X132 b3? X133

[ 26...Nf6 X134 +/- is the accurate answer]

27.Rb1 X135 b2?? X136

[ 27...Nf6 X137 +/- is always the good retort, but now White wins in any case.]

28.Ke1 X138 f6?? X139 29.Kd1! X140 Rc4 X141 30.Rxb2 X142 Kf7 X143 31.Rb7+ X144 Ke6 X145 32.Re7#

Even if Greco's chess games, against anonymous players, are undoubtedly constructions, with didactic goals, they at least reveal much delicacy and a high level of playing.
