X0 King' s Indian, Gligoric-Taimanov System (7.Be3) [E92]

1.d4 X1 Nf6 X2 2.c4 X3 g6 X4 3.Nc3 X5 Bg7 X6 4.e4 X7 d6 X8 5.Nf3 X9 0-0 X10 6.Be2 X11 e5 X12 7.Be3 X13

7.0-0 and 7.d5 are the most usual answers. The move chosen by Aronian constitutes precisely the Gligoric-Taimanov system.

7...c6 X14

This flexible answer, reinforcing the control on the center, seems to have been introduced by Donner against Olafson in 1992.

[ The main line continues, as you know, by: 7...Ng4 X15 8.Bg5 X16 f6 X17 9.Bh4 X18 Nc6 X19 10.d5 X20 Ne7 X21 11.Nd2 X22 Nh6 X23 +/= and the position is in conformity with main objectives of the King' s Indian. In particular both Black Knights controls the f6-square and the advance of the f-pawn will be possible at the appropriate time. Let us see as an example: 12.f3 X24 c5 X25 13.dxc6 X26 bxc6 X27 14.b4 X28 Be6 X29 15.Nb3 X30 d5 X31 16.Bf2 X32 d4 X33 17.Na4 X34 g5 X35 18.Nac5 X36 Bc8! X37 19.0-0 X38 Ng6 X39 20.g3 X40 Bh3 X41 21.Re1 X42 Qc8 X43 22.Qd2 X44 Nf7 X45 23.Bf1 X46 Nd6 X47 24.Na5 X48 Bxf1 X49 25.Rxf1 X50 h5!? X51 26.Qe2 X52 f5! X53 27.exf5 X54 Qxf5 X55 28.Ne4 X56 Nxe4 X57 29.fxe4 X58 Qh3?! X59 30.Be1? X60 ( 30.Nxc6! X61 + - ) 30...Rxf1+ X62 31.Qxf1 X63 Qg4 X64 32.Qg2 X65 h4 X66 33.gxh4 X67 Qe6 X68 34.Bd2 X69 g4 X70 35.Kh1? X71 Nxh4 X72 -/+ Zubarev, Alexander2 (2515) - Tukhaev, Adam (2517) (44 m.) 0-1 [E92] UKR-ch fin Kharkov 17.11.2007. ]

8.d5 X73 Ng4 X74 9.Bg5 X75 f6 X76 10.Bh4 X77 c5 X78 11.0-0 X79 h5 X80 12.Ne1 X81 Nh6 X82 13.f3 X83 Nf7N X84

This novelty reinforces the Black control on the strategic diagonal d8-h4.

[ Leads to an equal position: 13...g5 X85 14.Bf2 X86 f5 X87 15.exf5 X88 Nxf5 X89 16.Nc2 X90 Nd4 X91 17.Nxd4 X92 exd4 X93 18.Ne4= X94 Ibrahimov, Rasul (2527) - Mamedov, Nidjat (2574) (23 m.) 1/2-1/2 AZE-ch Baku 19.01.2008.]

14.Rb1 X95

With the center closed, each camp must organize a flank attack: Black on the King side and White on the Queen one.

14...Bh6! X96

Black takes judiciously the full control of the open diagonal c1-h6 and threatens: ...Be3+ next ...Bd4.

15.Bf2 X97 Na6 X98

Black continues to develop his game with initiative.

16.a3 X99 b6 X100 17.b4 X101 f5 X102

It is interesting to notice the simultaneity of both attacks.

18.exf5 X103

[ May be considered: 18.Nd3 X104 Nc7 X105 19.Qe1 X106 Bd7 X107 20.exf5 X108 Bxf5 X109 21.Ne4 X110 +/=]

18...gxf5 X111 19.f4! X112

"Baths in the Reales

     Baths in the Reales
      Alacazares, Sevilla

With the ambition to active his pieces by opening some strategic lines. It follows a pawn exchange.

19...Bxf4 X113 20.Bxh5 X114 Bd7 X115 21.Rb3 X116 Qg5!? X117

Apparently an excellent move: the main role of a Queen is to coordinate an attack. Nevertheless the vulnerability of the Black Royal couple gives to White some tactical opportunities.

22.b5? X118

This pawn advance reveals an inaccurate vision of the position.

[ A nice idea is to play the e1-Knight right now: 22.Nd3! X119 Be3 X120 23.bxc5! X121 ( 23.Nb5!? X122 Indeed, after the following spectacular exchange series: 23...Bxb5 X123 24.cxb5 X124 c4 X125 25.Nxe5 X126 Bxf2+ X127 26.Rxf2 X128 cxb3 X129 27.Nxf7 X130 Qe3 X131 28.Nxd6 X132 Nc7 X133 29.Nc4! X134 White has a significant (and presumably winning!) advantage. ) But, in fact the exchange in c5 it still a better idea, because it exploits two particularities of this position: 1) The Queen side Rook is on the 3th rank 2) The Black Queen may be pinned in g3; 23...Nxc5 X135 ( Another alternative, exploiting the same tactical concept, is: 23...Bxf2+ X136 24.Nxf2 X137 Nxc5 X138 25.Nce4 X139 Nxe4 X140 26.Nxe4 X141 fxe4 X142 27.Rg3 X143 leads to an obvious White winning game! ) 24.Nxc5 X144 Bxc5 X145 25.Bxc5 X146 bxc5 X147 26.Ne4 X148 fxe4 X149 27.Rg3 X150 + - White wins easily.]

22...Nc7 X151 23.Bxf7+ X152 Rxf7 X153 24.Ne2 X154 Rg7 X155

Previous moves since the Aronian' s mistake was obvious. But here it is not so evident for White to choose an appropriate suite:

25.Nxf4 X156

Other alternatives are not better.

25...Qxf4 X157 26.Bxc5?! X158

To try to win a pawn in such an unfavourable position is a deathwish!

26...Qh6! X159

[ Is favourable to White: 26...Qxc4? X160 27.Bxd6 X161 Bxb5 X162 28.Rxb5 X163 Qxb5 X164 29.Bxe5 X165 Nxd5 X166 30.Rxf5 X167 Rf8 X168 31.Rxf8+ X169 Kxf8 X170 32.Bxg7+ X171 Kxg7 X172 33.Qd4+ X173 + - ]

27.Be3 X174 f4 X175 28.Bc1 X176 Bg4 X177 29.Qd2 X178 Rf8 X179 30.Nd3 X180 Ne8 X181 31.Nxf4 X182

[ There is no way to save White. For example, after: 31.Nf2 X183 Bf5 X184 32.Rg3 X185 Rff7 X186 33.Re1 X187 Nf6 X188 34.Rxg7+ X189 Rxg7 X190 35.Qe2 X191 e4! X192 Black has probably a winning attack.]

31...Rxf4 X193 32.Rxf4 X194 Qxf4 X195 33.Qxf4 X196 exf4 X197 34.Bxf4 X198

Then we reach an interesting endgame with a Black Knight against three White pawns. Who will be the strongest?

34...Rf7 X199 35.g3 X200 Re7 X201 36.h3?! X202

Of course Black pieces have an increasing activity, but is it necessary to give this pawn?

[ Unfortunatly, White is unable to take the opposition on the e-file, because the vulnerability of his pawns of the Queen side: 36.Re3?? X203 - + and then: 36...Rxe3 X204 37.Bxe3 X205 Be2 X206 38.Kf2 X207 Bxc4 X208 39.Bf4 X209 Bxd5 X210 40.Ke3 X211 Kf7 X212 and Black wins the ending!; Similarly, Black wins after: 36.Rb1 X213 Be2 X214 37.Rc1 X215 Re4 X216 38.Re1 X217 Bd3 X218 39.Rxe4 X219 Bxe4 X220 40.Kf2 X221 Bd3 X222 ]

36...Bxh3 X223 37.Kf2 X224 Nf6 X225 38.g4 X226 Bxg4 X227 39.Re3 X228 Ne4+ X229

The Black Knight is very strong!

40.Ke1 X230 Kf7 X231 41.a4 X232 Nc5 X233 42.Kd2 X234 Rxe3 X235 43.Kxe3 X236 Ke7 X237 44.Kd4

There is nothing to save: Black wins!
