X0 Queen' s Indian defence, Petrossian System: 4.a3 [E12]

1.d4 X1 Nf6 X2 2.c4 X3 e6 X4 3.Nf3 X5 b6 X6 4.a3 X7 Bb7 X8 5.Nc3 X9 Ne4 X10

"Especially in the opening, latent control of central squares is usually preferable to their direct occupation" (Igor Stohl).

[ 5...d5 X11 is the more reliable and the main answer in this beginning.]

6.Nxe4 X12 Bxe4 X13 7.Nd2 X14

"The most ambitious continuation. White strives for a broad pawn-centre, 7.e3 or 7.Bf4 promises only a small edge at best". (Igor Stohl).

[ Tigran Petrossian, in a training game against Victor Kortchnoi, chose the alternative move: 7.Bf4 X15 and then it was played: 7...Be7 X16 8.e3 X17 c5 X18 9.Bd3 X19 Bxd3 X20 10.Qxd3 X21 cxd4 X22 11.Nxd4 X23 a6 X24 12.Rd1 X25 +/= All the game is constructed around the theme of the control of the open d-file (Petrosian, Tigran V - Kortchnoi, Victor (33 m.) 1-0 [E12] Moscow Training 1966).]

7...Bg6?!N X26

This move was a novelty when this game was played.

[ The usual answer: 7...Bb7 X27 seems more natural. For example: 8.e4 X28 Qf6 X29 9.d5 X30 Bc5 X31 10.Nf3 X32 a5 X33 11.Bd3 X34 h6 X35 12.0-0 X36 e5 X37 13.Bd2 X38 Na6 X39 14.b4 X40 axb4 X41 15.axb4 X42 Nxb4 X43 16.Rxa8+ X44 Bxa8 X45 17.Be2 X46 Bb7 X47 18.Bc3 X48 0-0 X49 19.Qd2 X50 Qe7 X51 20.Nxe5 X52 +/= Jankovic, Alojzije (2548) - Lenic, Luka (2531) (33 m.) 1/2-1/2 [E12] CRO-chT Sibenik 13.10.2007.]

8.g3! X53

It is judicious to exploit the uncontrolled long (a8-h1) diagonal.

8...Nc6 X54 9.e3 X55 a6 X56

[ Has been recently experimented: 9...e5 X57 10.d5 X58 Na5 X59 11.h4 X60 h6 X61 12.Bh3 X62 Nb7 X63 13.0-0 X64 a5 X65 14.b3 X66 Nc5 X67 15.e4 X68 Bd6 X69 16.Bf5 X70 Qf6 X71 17.Qg4 X72 h5 X73 18.Qf3 X74 but after the exchanges: 18...Bxf5 X75 19.Qxf5 X76 Qxf5 X77 20.exf5 X78 the game does not offer any more prospects.]

10.b4 X79 b5 X80 11.cxb5 X81 axb5 X82 12.Bb2 X83 Na7 X84 13.h4! X85 h6? X86

"It is not easy to foresee at this moment, but this seemingly solid move is a serious and probably decisive mistake" (Igor Stohl).

[ If Black chooses the more active reply: 13...h5!? X87 and if the game continues in the same way: 14.d5 X88 exd5 X89 15.Bg2 X90 c6 X91 16.0-0 X92 f6 X93 17.Re1 X94 Be7 X95 the g4-square is now unavailable for the White Queen.]

14.d5! X96

"Maybe Andersson reckoned only with 14.e4?! d5! The pawn sacrifice opens the long diagonal (a1-h8) and Black won' t get any respite until the end of the game" (Igor Stohl).

[ Of course, after: 14.e4?! X97 d5! X98 15.Bg2 X99 Be7 X100 16.0-0 X101 0-0 X102 17.Re1 X103 +/= White has a little edge, but presumably insufficient to win the game.]

14...exd5 X104 15.Bg2 X105 c6 X106 16.0-0 X107 f6 X108 17.Re1 X109 Be7 X110 18.Qg4! X111 Kf7 X112 19.h5 X113 Bh7 X114 20.e4 X115 dxe4 X116 21.Bxe4 X117 Bxe4 X118 22.Nxe4 X119 Nc8 X120 23.Rad1 X121 Ra7 X122 24.Nxf6 X123

[ We may notice that White wins equally after: 24.Bd4! X124 Rc7 X125 25.Nc5 X126 Bd6 X127 26.Re3 X128 Kf8 X129 27.Na6 X130 Rb7 X131 28.Bc5 X132 Be7 X133 29.Bxe7+ X134 Nxe7 X135 + - In this position, Black is unable to protect himself against White Knight threatens: Nxb7 and the Royal Fork Ne6 + 30.Nc5 X136 ]

24...gxf6 X137 25.Qg6+ X138 Kf8 X139 26.Bc1 X140 d5 X141 27.Rd4 X142 Nd6 X143 28.Rg4 X144 Nf7 X145 29.Bxh6+ X146 Ke8 X147 30.Bg7 + -

This time White wins without problem.
