«CHESS THEORY EDITORIAL No1»
Robert James Fischer, Birth: March 9, 1943, Chicago, Illinois, USA, Nationality: USA - United States of America, IM : 1957, Grandmaster : 1958, US Champion : 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, we say that quietly, without excessive passion, winning, at Reykjavik, Iceland the World Chess Championship 1972 Title Match, has signed with his hand, with his mind, with his heart, with a fierce determination the greatest page of all Chess History ! Like Chess players it is impossible to stay indifferent faced with the dreadfull imbroglio in which struggles currently the great chess player ever. We have to be informed about current events, but information excess is as harnful as lack. It's true we need to know what happen now concerning Bobby Fischer's detention at Narita International Airport, in Japan, or perhaps in Tokyo at the present time, and possible deportation to the US on charges he participated a 1992 match in Yugoslavia in violation of a US and NATO ban. But we have also to think!... First of all Robert, James Fischer, informally "Bobby", has at least joined at the top legendar chess players Gioacchino Greco, Philidor, Paul Morphy, Alexander Alekhine, and certainly Garry Kasparov. Nevertheless according to his dazzling ascent like a young player, the "Mozartian" beauty of his game, the historical context of the Cold War and finally his incredible confrontation with the impressive army of Soviet Grandmasters of this time, it's true "Bobby"'s case is absolutly unique! Now we point out the personnal impact of Bobby Fischer's career in the current development of chess practice through the world, mainly in the West. We say that without neglect the considerable contribution of Russian Chess School and million chess players from Eastern Europe countries. Any way, more than anybody else Bobby is, through the worldwide, a constant source of dream and fascination for all chess players, and of vocation for kids. At this stage of our argumentation we ask this fondamental question : Is Bobby Fischer a criminal ? Has Bobby Fischer acted greatly again morals, ethics, or private interest of human beings ? ... Certainly no! In spite of his regrettable anti-Jewish sentiments and declarations, we think there are nothing significant people may blame Bobby for! Also we ought to stand back a bit from things. The truth is that Bobby Fischer is a sole man facing the all-powerful reasons of State... Like it has been rightly said, Bobby is a pawn on the International Chessboard and neither US nor Japan is really interested by him, excepted for the diplomatic and politic profit they are mutually able to make of current events. Sincerly this situation compels us to react. More than ever we ought to become aware of our belonging to the Worldwide Chess Community. Bobby Fischer is an essential part of this one and, in fact, he is a component of each of us ; without him we'll lose certainly a large field of our own chess player identity. Hence we have to imagine the worst. Bobby Fischer is deported to the US, deprived of all liberty, judged in a long and defamatory action, imprisoned for years... And during all this time we'll go on with a clear conscience playing, day by day, our pleasant little chess games !?... Is it possible? Is it just conceivable ? We solemnly proclaim it's not! Save Bobby!
