«Michel Bruneau, Normandie (1981)» You may observe easily that in the Chess-Theory website (or more simply: CT) I do not usually speak of myself ... But, I imagine that if you are visiting this page and the following ones, you wish presumably to know a little more: who is Michel Bruneau? In the present page I propose to you a classical Autobiography ... And thereafter, in a more intimist way, I invite you equally to discover:
«Michel Bruneau at the age of 7» In spite of war and deprivation I was a happy child. This fact is due both to my character and to a favorable familial environment, with my Parents, my Great Parents, my Aunt and my Uncle, and of course my young Brother, my perpetual game & entertainment comrade!... During the following years I had other brothers and sisters since we were pleased to constitude a family of eight children. And the truth is that I am very attached to each one of them and that each one represents a great richness for me. However, due to our age proximity, many circumstances and our personality, friendship between my first brother and me was always exceptional and remains a great value in my life of today.
«My Brother and I in Vic-sur-Aisne (1946)» I was a pupil in many schools before to reach the end of my secondary school life. I was moderately interested by teachings I have received. My true passion was to devour books... All kind of books, but in particular adventure and travel stories, history books and scientific reviews... I may add that still very young I was captivated by Old Civilizations, in particular all what concern Greece and Egypt!
«Michel Bruneau in 1971» Mathematics was equally a teenage passion, while my interest for Science and Philosophy came more later, approximately when I was 16 years old. After I graduated and I received my French baccalaureate (in June, 1951) I was not sure about what I wanted to become: an Engineer, a Philosophy teacher or a Mathematician... Ultimately, I chose to first study Mathematics! Then I was a student, mainly in mathematics, but also in physics and mechanics, in the Universities of Reims, Strasbourg, Paris VII-Jussieu, Paris XI-Orsay, but equally at the Institut Henri Poincaré and at the Collège de France in Paris. I worked under the responsibility of Paul-André Meyer (21 August 1934 - 30 January 2003) well known French Probabilist, my thesis Director, and Yves Meyer (born July 19, 1939), professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan and a member of the Académie des Sciences. I am equally obliged to Jean-Pierre Kahane, professor emeritus at the Université Paris-Sud in Orsay and Commandeur in the order of the Legion d'Honneur, for his constant help and encouragement during many years. In 1964 I become an assistant professor in mathematics at the University of Reims. Finally, I defended my thesis in mathematics at the Université Louis Pasteur Strasbourg I, on June 19, 1970, and became then Docteur d'État in Mathematics. I remember, as a very good souvenir, that my Parents accompanied me at this occasion ... By chance, I have a photograph of the event:
«Michel Bruneau defending his thesis at I pursued my research on Real Analysis and, when I was professor at the University of Tunis (Tunisia), I wrote a book containing basic part of my research, which was published in 1973, thanks to Jean-Pierre Kahane, professor at the Université of Orsay Paris XI: «Variation totale d'une fonction» - Michel Bruneau. Lecture Notes in Mathematics, vol. 413, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1974, 332 + xiv pp. Subsequently I was equally interested in Number Theory and Probability researches. I retired in September, 2003, at the age of 65.
«Wooden Chess Pieces» I may add as a significant feature of my life that I lived 15 years in Africa: first one year in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire in 1963-64, at the age of 27, and more later consecutively 6 years in Tunis, Tunisia (1971 - 1977) and 8 years in Rabat, Morocco (1978-1986). This was an opportunity to visit various fascinating African countries ... But more of all, this long immersion in the African Reality has been an irreplaceable experience and has changed me deeply!... Also you can call me: "Michel the African"! Through my basic formation, my readings and all my life I was leaded, by a perpetual keenness (a kind of furor!), to explore endlessly the unfathomable area of the knowledge... In mathematics, sciences, literature, philosophy (I confess how it is sometime difficult, for a neophyte as me, to understand Kant, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre or Badiou!) ... and history (only some readings, meanly about Civilizations of the past, with a clear predilection for Greece and Egypt!) At the age of 10 my father learned me how to play chess... I played only from time to time two or three years; after what I lost entirely the contact with «The Noble game of Chess» until I was a professor at the University of Rabat (Morocco), at the age of 40!... Of course, in spite of my passion and my enthusiasm to learn always more, it was too late! ... I was a club chess player for about 20 years and a correspondence chess player near 10 years ... Now I devote all my time to theoretical researches about Chess Theory and obviously to CT!

My Idea is to create, with YOUR HELP (!!), a Non-Profit Educational Foundation (the So-Called: "CHESS-THEORY FOUNDATION") dedicated to Chess, Chess and Art, Art (Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Architecture & Design), Sciences, Literature, Art & Poetry, Associations, Daily Life and all connected data. At this subject, you may express your feelings on our GUESS BOOKS, in the WORLD or contact me at the bottom of this page. Life is something evanescent and cabbalistic which can not be reduced to an event series. The more we draw in profile our smiley visage, the more we hide this intimate injury which is also a part of ourselves ... If you wish discover more secret facets of Michel's personnality, I invite you now to visit:
