Florida is a state located in the southeastern United States.

Most of the state is a large peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico on its west and the Atlantic Ocean on its east. It has a warm and humid subtropical climate. It was named by Juan Ponce de León, who landed on the coast on April 2, 1513, during Pascua Florida (Spanish for "Flowery Easter," referring to the Easter season). Florida's economy relies heavily on tourism. The capital is Tallahassee and the largest city is Jacksonville.

«In an effort to provide Florida players with more events and to get more chess players active in events, the FCA has started a Florida Grand Prix (GP). USCF rated events run by an FCA affiliate will qualify for Florida Grand Prix points. Players must be members of the FCA to accumulate the GP points. The initial period of the Grand Prix will be for events rated from Oct. 1, 2006 to Aug. 15, 2007. "Playing averages" are created for each FCA player that is similar to Baseball's batting average.
