Fairy Chess: Non-orthodox Chess problem compositions. A problem or puzzle where some official rules of the traditional game of Chess are suspended or changed (Chess Terminology - see: Chess-Poster.com). A Faker is, in the Hans Kmoch's vocabulary, a half-free pawn with inadequate helpers (friendly pawns) (Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Terminology). Family check: Bogoljubow's lighthearted term for a Knight fork which includes an attack on the King (Chess Terminology - see: Chess-Poster.com). Fantascacchi: «Scacchi e Letterature»
«Fantascacchi (Chess and literature - Chess and Art). Fantasy chess: «Fast 1000 Schachbilder für Ihre Homepage» (Chess and Art). Chess Fascination: (Chess and Art - Chess & Life - Chess Passion). Féerie des Échecs: «Faerie Chess»
«Féerie des Échecs Fers: The medieval name for the piece we now call the Queen, derived from the Persian word "Vizier" (Chess Termonology - Chess History). Figurine Notation: A system of recording the moves of a Chess game similar to Algebraic Notation except that small pictures of the pieces and Pawns are substituted for their names. This method has been popularized by published articles in newspapers and other periodicals or various chess publications (Chess Practice - see: Chess-Poster.com). Fifty move rule: A game can be drawn when fifty moves have been made by each player without a capture or pawn advancement (Chess Rule). A File is a vertical line on the chessboard. There is 8 files; each of them constituted by 8 squares: a-file: a1,a2,a3,a4,a5,a6,a7,a8 b-file: b1,b2,b3,b4,b5,b6,b7,b8 c-file: c1,c2,c3,c4,c5,c6,c7,c8 d-file: d1,d2,d3,d4,d5,d6,d7,d8 e-file: e1,e2,e3,e4,e5,e6,e7,e8 f-file: f1,f2,f3,f4,f5,f6,f7,f8 g-file: g1,h2,g3,g4,g5,g6,g7,g8 h-file: h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6,h7,h8 (NCT II - "Chessboard geometry"). Open File: According to Ludek Pachman's ideas, a file is open for White (Black) if the friend pawn of this file has disapeared. This definition is justified by the fact that then major White (Black) pieces make pression on the opposite camp, via this file, and particularly on enemy pawns occupying it (Chess Terminology - According to Ludek Pachman's ideas). Totally Open File: An Open File without any pawn of both camps; in this case either a side menages to take the total control of the column, which is almost a pledge of victory, or then the opposed side is able to take the opposition, on this file, and one can arrive to a general exchange of the major pieces. But, many other intermediate situations can occur and it is advisable to examine individually Show Games (SHGA:), as we will do it on this site (Chess Terminology - Classical & Modern Chess Theory). When an Open File Fight occurs in a chess game it is indeed one of the most important and decisive phases of the evolution of the game. We shall study on this site many concrete situations. One finds a typical example of Open File Fight in the game:
Williams, Elijah - Stauton, Howard [A43-w] London knockout playoff
-3pl London (7), 1851 - Chess-Theory Analyzed Game No 052 . After the beginning: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 c5 3.d5 exd5 4.exd5 d6 5.c4 Bf5 6.Bd3 Bxd3 7.Qxd3 Nf6 8.Nc3 Be7 9.Nf3 0-0 10.0-0 Nbd7 11.Qf5 a6 12.12.Ne2 b5 13.b3!? bxc4 14.bxc4 Rb8 15.Rb1 we are in the Deep Middle Game (DEMG:) and is just engaged the b-Open File Attack (bOFA:):
But, after the following moves: 15...Rxb1 16.Qxb1 Qb6 17.Qc2 Rb8 Everyone can understand that Black wins here the Open File Fight.
Obviously, Stauton has a good control of the critical square b2 and this way it is difficult for Black to penetrate in White's camp! (Classical & Modern Chess Theory). a Fixed Pawn is a pawn unable to exchange with an enemy pawn and equally blocked by an enemy pawn situated on the square before him. Such a pawn cannot move any more (Chess Terminology). Fixed Center is another expression for Blocked Center (Chess Terminology). Fixed Pawn Structure is another expression for Blocked Pawn structure (Chess Terminology). By Flanks we mean the two Wings of the chessboard: A Flank Attack is an attack concentrated on a Flank of the chessboard (Chess Terminology). Fluid Pawn Structure is another expression for Mobile Pawn Structure (MPST:) (Chess Terminology). Focal point: A weak square near the enemy king (for example: f2 for White & f7 for Black). This is targeted by the attacker, and the defender may find it difficult to protect. More than one focal point makes an attack stronger (Chess Termonology - see: Rob McDonell, ARK ANGLES). Folk Art Chess Set: «Columbian Chess Set» (Chess Practice Today - Chess & Life - Chess Passion). Fool’s mate: The following brief Checkmate: 1. f3 e6 2. g4 Qh4#
(Chess Practice - Chess Trap). Forces of White (Black) army are constituted by all his chessmen and pawns (Chess War Terminology). A Forced Move is a move that, in a given position, the side having to play is more or less obliged to choice. Let us watch attentively the game:
Saemisch, Friedrich - Nimzovitch, Aaron [E06-l*] Copenhagen, 1923 -
Chess-Theory Analyzed Game No 068 . In the following position :
it is rather obvious that the White's answer is forced: 18.Nb1 (Chess Practice - Chess Terminology). Forcing Move: has the same significance as Constraining Move (COTM:) (Chess Terminology). Fork: A particular form of double attack where one piece threatens two enemy pieces at the same time. In a triple fork, three enemy pieces are threatened (Chess Terminology). Fork Lever: A lever P-Q, where a pawn, for example P, attacks also another piece (pawn or figure) (Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Terminology). A Knight Fork is a fork provoked by a Knight (Chess Terminology). A Double Knight Fork is the linking of two Knight Forks (Chess Terminology). A Queen Fork is a fork provoked by a Queen (Chess Terminology). The Three Knights Basic Formation is the standard position:
Nf3, Nf6, Nc3
(New Chess Theory - Chess-Theory Analysis). The Four Knights Basic Formation is the standard position:
Nf3, Nf6, Nc3, Nc6
Nevertheless the Black Queenside Knight is often first developed in d7 or a6 (with the idea: ...Nc7 ). You will find, in Chess-Theory's Analysed Games some examples of this situation and in the ECO Codes Base (ECB:) various openings including this formation. (New Chess Theory - Chess-Theory Analysis). The Kluger-Tal Formation is an exemplary formation encounter for the first time in the game:
Kluger, Gyula - Tal, Mihail [A43-r4*] Kislovodsk, 1964 - Chess-Theory
Analyzed Game No 059 after: 18...Rad8
This position will be closely studied in next chapters of our NCT Lecture (New Chess Theory - Chess-Theory Analysis). The Polugaevsky-Eising Formation is an exemplary formation encounter for the first time in the game:
Polugaevsky, Lev - Eising, Johannes [A43-w5*] Kislovodsk, 1964 -
Chess-Theory Analyzed Game No 060 after: 11...bxc5
This position will be closely studied in next chapters of our NCT Lecture (New Chess Theory - Chess-Theory Analysis). Fortress: A defensive blockade to keep out the enemy forces, especially the King (Chess War Terminology - see: Rob McDonell, ARK ANGLES. All Rights Reserved). Forward Pawn: A pawn that is at the very front of a pawn chain. It is the only pawn contained in the chain that does not protect another pawn (Chess Terminology - see: Rob McDonell, ARK ANGLES. All Rights Reserved). A Free Line is a straight line of the chessboard (file, rank or diagonal) answering to the following simple condition: at least five consecutive squares of this line do not contain any pawn. This new concept is among main ideas that we will develop in the NCT (New Chess Theory). A Totally Free Line is a straight line of the chessboard (file, rank or diagonal) containing no one pawn of both sides (New Chess Theory). A Free Light Diagonal is a Light diagonal which is equally a Free Line (New Chess Theory). A Free Dark Diagonal is a Dark diagonal which is equally a Free Line (New Chess Theory). Free Pawn or Passer are Hans Kmoch's expressions for name a Passed Pawn (Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Vocabulary). Pawn Front: A set of friendly pawns near ones with others and being able to be regarded as an entity (Current Chess Theory). Frontal Assault: A direct attack on an enemy pawn that is located on the same half-open file as your heavy pieces (Chess Terminology - see: Rob McDonell, ARK ANGLES. All Rights Reserved). Frontspan: Hans Kmoch's term meaning the vertical distance between a pawn and the forward edge of the board (Chess Terminology - see: ChessVille.com - Glossary of Terms - Pawn Power in Chess by Hans Kmoch). Front-twin: Hans Kmoch's expression meaning the foremost doubled pawn (Chess Terminology - see: ChessVille.com - Glossary of Terms - Pawn Power in Chess by Hans Kmoch).
