The chessboard is sudivided in two equal Zones names Half-Chessboards . The first one is constituted by the four first ranks and the second one by the four last ranks The White Half-Chessboard (in red) is the union of ranks: 1, 2, 3, 4. And the Black Half-Chessboard (in blue) is the union of ranks: 5, 6, 7, 8.
(NCT II - "Chessboard geometry"). The Home Half-Chessboard is the Zone of the chessboard constituted by the four ranks 1 to 4 for White & 5 to 8 for Black (NCT II - "Chessboard geometry"). The Opponent Half-Chessboard is the Zone of the chessboard constituted by ranks 5 to 8 for White & 1 to 4 for Black (NCT II - "Chessboard geometry"). A Half-free Pawn is a pawn either without counterpawn or without sentry. Thus, if P is a pawn located on the (i,j)-square, let us consider the P-Promoting Zone: PZ_(i,j)= set of (k,l)-squares such that: k=i-1, i, i+1 & l=j+1, j+2, ..., 8 if P is White. PZ_(i,j)= set of (k,l)-squares such that: k=i-1, i, i+1 & l=j-1, j-2, ..., 1 if P is Black. Then P is a Half-free Pawn under the following condition: Evidently a candidate pawn is, in particular, a half-free pawn. In the following diagram:
(Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Vocabulary). It happens sometimes to name Half-open File a file that contains none of one player's pawns but one or more of his opponent's. Personally we dislike this expression and will use it only, from time to time, to vary the terminology. But fundamentally speaking we agree with Ludek P„chman an consider such a file like an "Open file" (Classical Chess Theory). Half-pin: A pin in which the Chessman subject to the pin may move along the same line (file, rank or diagonal) which it shares with the attacker (Chess Terminology - see: Chess-Poster.com). Handicap: A means of trying to equalize chances in a game played between opponents of greatly different strengths. There are numerous methods of implementing a handicap (Chess Practice - see: Chess-Poster.com). Hanging Duo: is a Hans Kmoch's term for two connected White (Black) half-free pawns (Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Vocabulary - NCT XI - "Chess pawn structure II"). Hanging Pawns: is a Steinitz's term for two adjacent White (Black) pawns that are on the 4th (5th) rank, can't be supported by other friendly pawns, are not passed pawns and are on (half-)open files (Chess Terminology - see: East Tennessee State University Chess Club - Chess Glossary - NCT XI - "Chess pawn structure II"). Chess in the Harvard Community: «Murray Turnbull, chess master - The Big Picture: A snapshot of the Harvard Community - Story and photo by Jon Chase.» «"Play the Chessmaster, $2" the sign reads. The chess master, as he calls himself, has been a fixture in front of Holyoke Center in Harvard Square ever since 1982, a year before Au Bon Pain arrived. For $2 he takes on all comers, giving them a good advantage in his game of street chess: six minutes for the challenger, and three minutes for the chess master, to complete their game. Most often he wins, as he should, for Murray Turnbull is indeed a master, having reached that certified level in 1981. His current rating, just beneath the 2,400 that designates a senior master (the top category for nationally rated players) puts him in the top 1 percent of all rated players.» (Chess Practice Today - Chess & Life - Chess Passion). In a chain the Head Duo is the duo constituted by the headpawn (see: Headpawn) and the friendly pawn connected with it.
(Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Terminology). In a chain C the Headpawn is the only pawn not protecting any other. This is the strongest pawn of the chain. The most interesting case is that where the head of the Chain C is a Candidate Pawn or better still a Passed Pawn
(Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Terminology). Heavy Piece: means Major Piece (Queens and Rooks) (Chess Terminology). A Helper is, in Hans Kmoch's vocabulary, a pawn able to protect a friendly pawn. This concept is essentially used about a candidate pawn; this one need helpers (Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Terminology). Helpmate: A special Chess problem invented by Max Lange in which Black moves first and where both sides cooperate in mating the Black King (Chess Terminology). Two enemy pieces are in Hold if they are able to take each other; in this case we say also that they are in Contact (Classical Chess Theory). A Hole is a square that a camp is unable to protect by a pawn. As a result, the opponent find here a very good place for one of his figures, in particular for a Knight. In the following diagram:
(Classical Chess Theory). A Home Pawn is a pawn protecting the castled King. Usually there is two or three home pawns (Chess Terminology). . The Home Side is the side of the castle (evidently when the King castles). This is the kingside for a short castle and the queenside when the King castles long (Chess Terminology). Howler: A bad move. A mistake that overlooks a simple tactical response; this term is synonymous with Blunder (Chess Terminology). The Hypermodern School is the chess school founded at the beginning of the XXth century by Aaron Nizovitch, Richard Reti and some other great players of this time. We will study closely their works in the Modern Chess Theory (MCT:) Lecture (Chess Theory - Chess History). Huge Chess Game: «Play Chess in Munich (Germany)»
