- Half -

  • «Half-Chessboard» :

  • The chessboard is sudivided in two equal Zones names Half-Chessboards . The first one is constituted by the four first ranks and the second one by the four last ranks

The White Half-Chessboard (in red) is the union of ranks: 1, 2, 3, 4. And the Black Half-Chessboard (in blue) is the union of ranks: 5, 6, 7, 8.

    (NCT II - "Chessboard geometry").

  • «Home Half-Chessboard» HHCH:

  • The Home Half-Chessboard is the Zone of the chessboard constituted by the four ranks 1 to 4 for White & 5 to 8 for Black (NCT II - "Chessboard geometry").

  • «Opponent Half-Chessboard» OHCH:

  • The Opponent Half-Chessboard is the Zone of the chessboard constituted by ranks 5 to 8 for White & 1 to 4 for Black (NCT II - "Chessboard geometry").

  • «Half-free Pawn» HFRP:

  • A Half-free Pawn is a pawn either without counterpawn or without sentry.

Thus, if P is a pawn located on the (i,j)-square, let us consider the P-Promoting Zone:
    PZ_(i,j)= set of (k,l)-squares such that: k=i-1, i, i+1 & l=j+1, j+2, ..., 8 if P is White.
    PZ_(i,j)= set of (k,l)-squares such that: k=i-1, i, i+1 & l=j-1, j-2, ..., 1 if P is Black.

Then P is a Half-free Pawn under the following condition:
  • Either there is no one enemy pawn in the intersection between PZ_(i,j) and the i-file (no counterpawn),
  • or there is no one enemy pawn in the intersection between PZ_(i,j) and the (i-1) & (i+1)-files (no sentry).

  • Evidently a candidate pawn is, in particular, a half-free pawn. In the following diagram:

  • a6
  • is a half-free pawn (one counterpawn and no one sentry).
  • c4
  • is a half-free pawn (one sentry and no one counterpawn).
  • d6
  • is a passed (free) pawn (no one sentry and no one counterpawn).
  • e4
  • is not a half-free pawn (one counterpawn and one sentry).
  • g5
  • is a half-free pawn (two sentries and no one counterpawn).

(Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Vocabulary).

  • «Half-open File» :

  • It happens sometimes to name Half-open File a file that contains none of one player's pawns but one or more of his opponent's. Personally we dislike this expression and will use it only, from time to time, to vary the terminology. But fundamentally speaking we agree with Ludek P„chman an consider such a file like an "Open file" (Classical Chess Theory).

  • «Half-pin» :

  • Half-pin: A pin in which the Chessman subject to the pin may move along the same line (file, rank or diagonal) which it shares with the attacker (Chess Terminology - see: Chess-Poster.com).

    - Hand -

  • «Handicap» :

  • Handicap: A means of trying to equalize chances in a game played between opponents of greatly different strengths. There are numerous methods of implementing a handicap (Chess Practice - see: Chess-Poster.com).

  • «Hanging Duo» HAND:

  • Hanging Duo: is a Hans Kmoch's term for two connected White (Black) half-free pawns (Modern Chess Theory - Hans Kmoch's Vocabulary - NCT XI - "Chess pawn structure II").

  • «Hanging Pawns» HANP:

  • Hanging Pawns: is a Steinitz's term for two adjacent White (Black) pawns that are on the 4th (5th) rank, can't be supported by other friendly pawns, are not passed pawns and are on (half-)open files (Chess Terminology - see: East Tennessee State University Chess Club - Chess Glossary - NCT XI - "Chess pawn structure II").

    «Chess in the Harvard Community

«"Play the Chessmaster, $2" the sign reads. The chess master, as he calls himself, has been a fixture in front of Holyoke Center in Harvard Square ever since 1982, a year before Au Bon Pain arrived. For $2 he takes on all comers, giving them a good advantage in his game of street chess: six minutes for the challenger, and three minutes for the chess master, to complete their game. Most often he wins, as he should, for Murray Turnbull is indeed a master, having reached that certified level in 1981. His current rating, just beneath the 2,400 that designates a senior master (the top category for nationally rated players) puts him in the top 1 percent of all rated players.»
