Unbalanced Game: A game presenting, in particular during the deep middle game (see: Deep Middle Game (DEMG:)), typical unbalanced positions. (Current & New Chess Theory - NCT XV - "Sustained pressure" - NCT XVI - "Offensive strategy"). An Unbalanced Position is a position in which advantages and desadvantages of each camp globally are not of the same nature... Especially concerning the following aspects: (Current & New Chess Theory - NCT XV - "Sustained pressure" - NCT XVI - "Offensive strategy"). Unbalanced pawn structure: Pawn stuctures of both camps own some significant dissimilarities not necessarily easy to appreciate. This characteristic is rather stable, during a quite long phase of the game, and takes part in the imbalance concerning the whole position (i.e. also integrating chessmen). (Current & New Chess Theory - NCT XV - "Sustained pressure" - NCT XVI - "Offensive strategy"). Unclear: Is used to appreciate an unclear configuration. We do not hesitate sometimes, by observing a frankly complicated position, to practice this vague qualifier. One can judge that it is a sign either of modesty or of incapacity... (Chess Terminology - Chess Analysis). Under-promotion: A term used to describe pawn promotion in any piece other than a Queen (i.e. Rook, Bishop or Knight) (Chess Terminology - Chess Rule). Undoubling: To move a doubled pawn, by way of a capture, to a square of an ajacent file which contains no friendly pawn (Chess Terminology - Chess Tactics). We use the term Unfolding to refer to the course of a Chess game from the opening to the endgame (Chess Terminology - NCT IV - "Unfolding of a game"). Conceptual Unity: Alexander Alekhine expressed with force the fundamental unity of a chess game, in spite of various phases of its development. It is obvious that this oneness is initially conceptual and expresses, well beyond the particular choice of each move, the glance that a player has unceasingly in his spirit of the Chess game he is playing. It is precisely this premium feature that we name "conceptual unity of a chess game". It is moreover interesting to notice that we may observe many often a significant unity of a game in its entirety, in spite of the fact it is created by two players having diametrically opposed objectives. (Current & New Chess Theory - NCT IXX - "Keys of success"). All through the development of a Chess game, the White (Black) Conceptual Unity may be revealed by a main idea guiding this player throughout all the course of the game. (Current & New Chess Theory - NCT IXX - "Keys of success"). Unorthodox opening: An unusual and not classical opening. This kind of beginning is not commonly seen in grandmaster play (Chess Terminology). Unprotected Piece: A piece "P" of a camp is unprotected if no friend piece controls the square of the chessboard occupied by "P" (Chess Terminology). Unprotected Pawn: A pawn "P" of a camp is unprotected if no friend piece controls the square of the chessboard occupied by "P" (Chess Terminology). Unprotected Passed Pawn: A passed pawn "P" of a camp is unprotected if no friend piece controls the square of the chessboard occupied by "P" (Chess Terminology). Unsound: A term used to describe a failed stratagem or tactic (Chess Terminology - see: IBM - www.research.ibm.com). USCF: United States Chess Federation (Chess Practice).
