X-Ray Attack or simply X-Ray: Is the action (attack) of a piece (noted A) against ("through") a piece of the opposite camp (noted B), not for itself but with another objective - Usually this last one (the attacked piece B) blocks off or controls a line (file, rank or diagonal) corresponding to the actual objective. This veritable objective may be a most significant piece, a strategic square, a Castle attack, a mat combination. You don't confuse this notion with a skewer (or thrust), a pine or a line clearance. In fact, the main feature of an «X-Ray Attack» is the action of a piece A "through" a piece B of the opponent's camp. A typical example is given by the following position (Magrin - Sawij, Spain 1968) : source:
X-ray (chess) from Wikipedia the free encyclopedia
Instead of playing: 1.Qh7+ ?! Kf8 (and the Black King escapes temporarily the White'sv attack)
White has to his disposal the strongest answeer: 1.Qh6+ !! Bxh6 2.Bxh6+ Kh7 3.Bf8+
and the Black's King is mate next move. In this singular position, the White Bishop (piece A), initially in f4, acts on the h6-square "through" the g5 square, occupied by the opponent Bishop (piece B); such is an X-ray attack.
